Richard Garriott, otherwise known as the famous Lord British, creator of the historical Ultima, announced at South by Southwest that he is working on a new online game set in the world of Britannia, under the guise of Lord British. Why didn’t he just say he’s working on a new Ultima? He doesn’t own the license, as Electronic Arts still has that under their thumb

Booo Electronic arts! Like we need one more reason to hate EA. Geekosystem has more of the early details. They use words like "social network game" which of course scares the crap out of me. Still it's hard not to get excited when the creator of the absolute best computer game of all time (Ultima IV)is going back to the well one last time.

Ultima 7? One of the best games ever. And don't forget Ultima underworld!
Not to start a really sadly irrelevant flame war, but Ultima 7, though a big leap in technology, and plenty fun, was far less profound in the issues it explored or even the general premise. For my money, it's the middle trilogy of 4,5 and 6. Ultima 6 literally changed my world view (as a middle school student, but it has stuck with me).
