America's Giant Fighting Robot

A couple years ago a group of American nerds challenged a group of Japanese nerds to a good old fashioned Giant Robot Fight and well... here we are. Tuesday, October 17th at 7PM PT, the fight will be streamed on Twitch. Because why not put it on twitch? I think in October Discovery Science channel is wall to wall pumpkin chunking coverage.

I guess the fight has already taken place. In a very cricket like pace, the whole thing took like a week. They had days between rounds to get the robots back into fighting shape (which doesn't say a whole lot about the robots). Sounds like we're still pretty far away from our inevitable Robot Jox future. Thanks Obama.

Pacific Rim: Uprising Trailer #1

Hey kids, this looks really cool. I know some people were disappointed with how shallow the first Pacific Rim was but jebus, a robot hit a kaiju in the face with a cargo ship. What more are you looking for? I'm a bit disappointed they played switcharoo with the main character BUT John Bedoya is awesome so in the end it'll probably end up an upgrade. I'm definitely looking forward to canceling the apocalypse again.

Handmade Christmas Cards, Now Made by Lego Robots

Oh man do I need this. I am terrible at writing any sort of card. Birthday cards, Christmas cards, thank you cards from my wedding 10 years ago that I still have but never mailed out. Sorry Brian, I really do like that radio you gave us. I listen to it almost every day. I'm a terrible friend.

Anyway this Lego Mindstorm creation is amazing. I can't imagine how much it would cost or how long it would take to program.

Roomba Pong

This seems like a very creative way to both spill all your beer and ruin your Roomba. Personally I find beer pong kinda gross. That ball is not clean, I don't care if you dip it in water or not. You're really just playing an elaborate game of "I hope I don't get diarrhea from this".

I'd rather just play Bounce Off while drinking a fifth of bourbon. That's how classy people roll.

Bring it on Japan

A bunch of crazy nerds built this huge fighting robot and have challenged Japan to a fight. It is awesome and kind of makes that Battle Bots reboot look like clown shoes. Giant Robots representing each nation in a huge tournament to the death is a thing I demand happen asap.

In case you missed it, last week was the DARPA Robotics Challenge. I don't know what that is but it sounds cool. From the video it looks like it's a series of challenges for a bunch of really expensive robots and by challenges I mean mundane tasks like turning a door knob or walking...

Automata: The Trailer

A couple weeks ago I discovered there was a youtube app for the Roku, it's a bit clunky but it has this nice browsing feature that shows you trending videos in different categories. Early this morning while I was trying to get my daughter to fall back asleep I was dinking around on it and I caught the trailer for Automata. Aside from a horrible 5 seconds of Melanie Griffith's acting it looks really really cool. Unsurprisingly the indie I Robot rip off will probably be better than the Offical hollywood blockbuster I Robot adaption.

What do you think, will we see bipedal robots like these in our lifetime? How about artificial intelligence that's self aware? When you think about how far we've come with computers and technology in just the last 30 years it doesn't seem completely crazy, does it?

I'm not saying you should start prepping for the robot apocalypse now but maybe you should start thinking about it. Once robots realize what bastards humans are, it won't take them that long to go full skynet on us.

Behold, Twerk Bot

Hey Kids, remember Basement Jaxx? I think they had a hit in like 2001. Get Your Head Up, does that sound right? Doesn't matter I guess, here's their newest video in which scientists create a functional Twerk Bot. What's next a robot that can Merengue? Lambada? Cabbage Patch? Man, this is just one more step towards the robot apocalypse. At least it's a sexy step.

Giant Robot Feet are a thing I need

My slippers have a blow out in the heel, which means any time I wear them around the house the leave a trail of broken, brittle white plastic. Perfect for a baby to eat and catch lead cancer. I think I'm going to have to upgrade to these Giant Robot Feet (sound effects included). My birthday is right around the corner...

The Visual Effects for Pacific Rim

Here's a short video clip showing off some of the visual effects process that went into Pacific Rim. It's kind of cool to see how all the computer effects are layered on top of each other to create the finished product.

Pacific Rim was on my list of movies I wanted for Christmas but I didn't get it. No big deal, I got a couple Amazon gift cards so I can get it whenever I'd like. I'm thinking about buying a digital copy as opposed to the DVD. I don't have a blu ray player and if I buy it through Amazon video I can get the HD download for as much as the DVD costs. This is the way of the future anyway, right? I'm not sure if I'm happy or sad that I've been able to completely skip the blu ray format.

Amazon would like to bring about the robot apocalypse a bit sooner

I'm sure you've already seen this on the News/Facebook/Grandma's Pintrest but yesterday Amazon blew everyone's minds away when they announced that they were working on a 30 minute delivery option that would have your packages of less than 5 pounds delivered to you via flying robot drone. It really is terrifying. We're like 2 steps away from skynet here.

Here's video of Boston Dynamics newest robotic abomination the WildCat. If it's not the most terrifying thing in the world just imagine packs of these things with giant metal claws roaming the streets. Everyone is worried about zombies but it's the robot apocalypse that's going to get us.

OMG you guise, Pacific Rim

I'm a poor reviewer of stuff, so I barely do it. My only regular reviews are ..the Blurst of Times and half the time I don't even finish what I'm reviewing... then came Pacific Rim.

Pacific Rim was the raddest movie I have seen in FOREVER. For whatever reason It's been getting mixed reviews (Entertainment Weekly gave it a B-) and it was beat by Grown Ups 2 in the box office. But here's the deal no one really wants to talk about. Action movies are stupid. Even good ones like The Dark Knight or, oh I don't know lets say either version of True Grit, have ridiculous premises and giant plot holes. The well reviewed ones are usually the ones with snappy dialogue, unique art direction and great dramatic performances. Minus a couple shinning moments from Idris Elba Pacific Rim has none of that (ok it does have some pretty bad ass art direction).

What it does have is giant effing robots beating the crap out of and getting the crap beat out of them by giant Kiaju monsters. It's the most amazing 2 hour video game cutscene I've ever seen and it was well worth the money Loren paid for my ticket (I swear I'll pay you back). It excels so hard at what it tries to do it doesn't deserve its own award, it deserves its own Awards Show.

There's my review. Pacific Rim is the raddest movie I've seen in Forever. Go ahead and quote me on that, twice.

Pacific Rim Trailer #29, (SPOILER) we're still canceling the apocalypse

Here's the latest and greatest trailer for Pacific Rim. I'm not sure if it's really the 29th trailer but it kinda feels like it, doesn't it?

I believe this would be a good time to point out that this movie comes out on the 12th and my birthday is on the 8th. Now I'm not saying that you should take me to see this movie but you should at least think about getting me an AMC gift card.

Tonight We're All Canceling the Apocalypse

An "extended tv spot" for Pacific Rim hit the interwebs yesterday. Just in case you were wondering, yes it still looks incrediballs.

Someone in my office who will remain nameless actually thought this movie looked like it was "too much". It's not like I was friends with the guy before he said that, but after he said it he definitely made my enemies list. He's lower than Steve Jobs but he's above the cast of Glee.

fire up your mechs, there's a New Pacific Rim trailer

It's a new Pacific Rim trailer! So guess what? This movie comes out the day I have a medical procedure scheduled. Medical procedure is what they call it when they're doing something medically enough that they put you under but they don't have to cut you open so you don't have to go to a traditional hospital. In my case they're going to put a camera down my throat to take pictures of my innards and measure the ph of my stomach acid. I assume they will also find out if I have a chocolatey center while they're in there.

I guess what I'm saying is that I probably won't be able to see this opening night, but I totes want to see it on Saturday or Sunday. Also it would be nice if someone else bought my ticket. It's only fair you know 'cause of the MAJOR MEDICAL PROCEDURE I WILL HAVE JUST ENDURED!
