I only pick up 2 DC books on a monthly basis (Batgirl and Birds of Prey) and odds are this isn't going to change either book that dramatically.
Ok you caught me, I wasn't fearful at all but I should have been. This morning DC announce details on the new Batbooks and they revealed that Barbra Gordon is going to be Batgirl again.
If you don't read comics but still are reading this let me key you in onto why I'm pissed.
About 25 years ago (real life time, not comics time) the Joker shot Barbra Gordon (Commissioner Gordon's daughter and then Batgirl) in the spine, paralyzing her for life. Not one to let a little thing like that get her down she became Oracle, a sort of super computer hacking crime fighter who is constantly giving the superheroes of Gotham support and intel. She then gathered her own group of female crime fighters together to form the Birds of Prey. Think Charlies Angels but with less T&A (unless Ed Benes is drawing it) and more bad-assery.
Barbra Gordon is way more important to the DC Universe as Oracle than she ever was as Batgirl. As Batgirl she was just another spunky sidekick, but as Oracle she's a female/handicapable roll model that doesn't feel like an after school special crammed into a comic book. But I guess that's no match for having cute red hair, something the last two Batgirls have sorely missed.
As long as I'm ranting let me take 2 seconds to tell you how current Batgirl Stephanie Brown kicks ass. Stephanie Brown kicks ass.
BTW, here's the first cover of the new Birds of Prey (yawn). If the blonde girl really is Black Canary I think this totally confirms the new "ladies must wear pants" mandate from DC editorial.
again... BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!
