Is an ESPN columnist Scamming People on the internet?
Short answer Yes. Long answer Yes, she's been fired and deadspin already posted a follow up. Plus the guy that runs Nilson Report was scammed by her too.
Normally this is the sort of story I'd just bury in one of my links posts but I thought it was so interesting I wanted it to get it's own love. Maybe it's because in a round about way it hits close to home. You spend enough time on the internet and you run into all types. I've sold stuff to people that haven't paid, I've been contacted by "NBC lawyers" and have had several people inquire about integrating my website into their network of Nigerian princes.
The deadspin story is just a great reminder why I don't really try with this website. The fact that there are people paying for twitter accounts and stealing peoples facebook accounts is as good of reason as any to stay out of the world of blogging for money.

Seeing the damage the anonymity of the internet has created over the years I've given this a bit of thought. I think within the next 5 years we'll see some sort of internet user ID that uses biometric verification. People will still be able to use the net anonymously but anyone that wants will be able to use the verified ID, essentially an internet passport. It will also have the ability to be tied to credit accounts so businesses will know who is paying instantly. This will be the key to people accepting the ID as businesses will require it for job applications, businesses for making web purchases, etc. The anonymous jerks and scammers will still be around but nobody will trust anyone not having a verified ID. This will also tie into an always everywhere (tm) web, so rather than a patchwork of wireless providers the net will be always everywhere and nearly any electronic device will be connected to it (TV, car, coffee maker, watch, electric "paper", etc).
And yes, I await the "Simpsons did it" equivalent as I'm sure some geek book written 15 years ago already addressed this.
