In a move that surprised no one other than the gnomes living in Alan Moore's beard,
DC announced this morning a new series of Watchmen comics titled
Before Watchmen. Here's the rundown on the titles and the writers and artists involved.
RORSCHACH (4 issues) – Writer: Brian Azzarello. Artist: Lee Bermejo
MINUTEMEN (6 issues) – Writer/Artist: Darwyn Cooke
COMEDIAN (6 issues) – Writer: Brian Azzarello. Artist: J.G. Jones
DR. MANHATTAN (4 issues) – Writer: J. Michael Straczynski. Artist: Adam Hughes
NITE OWL (4 issues) – Writer: J. Michael Straczynski. Artists: Andy and Joe Kubert
OZYMANDIAS (6 issues) – Writer: Len Wein. Artist: Jae Lee
SILK SPECTRE (4 issues) – Writer: Darwyn Cooke. Artist: Amanda Conner
If you're nerdy like me you'll be pretty impressed with the creators they have lined up to work on this. If you're not, you probably stopped reading this a few minutes ago and just scrolled down to ogle Nicole Scherzinger's cleavage some more.
Of course this whole thing is a terrible idea. Watchmen doesn't need a sequel or a prequel or anything, it's perfect the way it is. DC should spend their time either getting better creative teams on their main books or letting their artists and writers work on more original properties. I get it, the 80s were a great decade for comics, instead of mining the past (crisis's for everyone!) why not try and make the 2010s another great decade for comics?
