Too Funny To Fail: The Review

Last night I watched the Hulu original "Too Funny to Fail: The Life and Death of the Dana Carvey Show" and wooo-doggie, I can't recommend it highly enough. Between this and "Batman & Bill" Hulu is really killing it with these pop culture documentaries. I hope they keep churning them out, I'd watch a billion of these.

For those not in the know The Dana Carvey Show was a sketch comedy show that ran on ABC for all of 7 episodes. It was a spectacular failure, especially when you consider all the talent that worked on the show: Steve Carell, Bill Chott, Stephen Colbert, Chris McKinney, Robert Smigel, Louis C.K, Charlie Kaufman, Jon Glaser, Spike Feresten, and Greg Daniels. Colbert, Carell and Louis C.K. would go on to be big stars in front of the camera but almost everyone involved with the show have had tremendous careers. Charlie Kaufman has been nominated for 4 academy awards for pete's sake.

While the documentary certainly paints the participants in a favorable light, it doesn't pull any punches as to why the show failed. Odds are anyone that remembers the show remembers how weird the skits were. The very first skit on the premier episode featured Bill Clinton breast feeding a baby and a bunch of puppies and kittens with a row of prosthetic teets. Even today a skit like that is going to get you relegated to 12:15am on Adult Swim. Imagine that in 1996, right after a very special episode of Home Improvement?

This is definitely a must watch for any comedy nerd or for anyone looking for some quick 1990s nostalgia.

Beard Hunk - SNL

I wanted to post last Saturday Night Live's cold open with Alec Baldwin as Trump but I figure that video has probably already been posted to your facebook feed like a thousand times. This Bachelor skit, Beard Hunk is every bit as good, maybe even a bit better. That's Ashley, Ally joke is gold Jerry, gold!

It's really weird that I've been enjoying SNL so much this season. I don't know if it's that my expectations for comedy have been beaten to death by years of Big Bang Theory of if SNL really has been that good. Probably a little for column A, a little for column B.

David S Pumpkins for President

This Haunted Elevator sketch from this weekend's SNL is one of the funniest things I've ever seen. This is like Waikiki Hockey levels of funny. Tom Hanks really is a national treasure. He's a great "actor" but would it kill him to throw us a comedy bone every couple years. Maybe a Joe Versus The Volcano 2?

I should also note that the last three Saturday Night Lives have all been really really good. Sure the election is helping, all the cold opens have been money but the rest of the show is really good too. I don't really know how they do in the ratings anymore but it's quickly become appointment watching for me. Meaning I watch it through Weekend Update and then go to bed.

Donald Trump vs. Hillary Clinton Debate Cold Open - SNL

This cold open from last weekends Saturday Night Live is one of the funniest things I've seen on the show since Chris Parnell was rapping about cupcakes. I almost woke up the entire house when Balldwin/Trump said "The problem with the blacks is..." Man, I can really imagine Trump saying that. Worst is you know his poll numbers would probably go up.

I Am Chris Farley: The Trailer

Oh man, if this doesn't look like it's going to be the funniest and saddest thing ever. I've heard his biography is a really good read but incredibly depressing too. I really like Chris Farley and kind of obsessed over SNL in the early 90s, so I'm going to do my best to go see this. I'll probably bring a box of kleenex with me.

Blown up Links

How One Stupid Tweet Blew Up Justine Sacco’s Life. I've seen this get passed around the web a lot, it's definitely worth a read. If you don't remember Justine Sacco was the woman that posted a tweet about going to Africa and catching aids right before she got on a plane. When she got off the plane the internet had eviscerated her and she had been fired. When you think about it, it's completely insane. Was the joke in bad taste? Maybe. Was it bad enough that she deserved to have her life ruined? Absolutely not.

The Tumultuous Stories Behind The Three Worst ‘SNL’ Seasons. The good people over at Uproxx have been producing a lot of crap "buzzfeed light" articles as of late, especially when it comes to tv shows and sports. However, this article on the 3 worst seasons on SNL is really good. Not too short, not too long and actually contains some interesting tidbits and facts. More of this stuff guys, less gifs from last nights Walking Dead.

Abandoned Water Slides From Around the World. Oh man, if there are two things I can't get enough of it's pictures of abandoned places and water slides from around the world. This is like a Reese's peanut butter cup but on the web.... don't try and eat it.

Guy sneaks pictures of himself into Grammy Museum, they go unnoticed for a month. Let's bring this back to the top post. This guy actually vandalizes a museum and he's an internet hero. Justine Sacco makes a joke about race... and why not let me completely defend her for a second here. Her joke about how white people can't get aids is so absurd it's obviously a joke poking fun at white privilege AND the idea that as long as awful things are happening to other people they're not your problem. It's actually a very subversive send up of casual racism. There's NO WAY she should have lost her job over it.

Lucky for Rihanna Taco guy here all he did was make fun of the Grammys and no one cares about the Grammys.

Puzzle World 6 looks alright

Back in the Halcyon days of the original Xbox I used to head over to the Microsoft campus and participate in game testing and focus groups. I WISH I got to test something as cool as Puzzle World 6. The only games I remember testing were a terrible Basketball game, a Mech game and a fighting game I tried like hell to have them rebrand into "Karl Douglas's Kung Fu-Fighting". I mean I really highjacked that focus group. I had this whole story about Karl Douglas having to fight his way through ninjas to collect his royalty checks and pay his rent on time. I still think Microsoft dropped the ball with that one.

The Saturday Night Live Verizon Ad

I bought my wife a new cell phone for Christmas this year. I told her I was a bit jealous because it was a 4G phone. She then asked me what the difference was between 4G and 3G. I told her it was 1G. True story.

Take it down a notch, will you buddy?

I'm not sure what happened, but sometime after he left Saturday Night Live and made that awful Red Sox movie with Drew Barrymore, Jimmy Fallon actually became funny. For proof I'll give you last weekends Saturday night Live. While this Tebow sketch doesn't actually have him in it, SNL was pretty solid all the way around.

I don't know how it came to this, but if given the option between watching Late Night with Jimmy Fallon or Conan, I'll probably watch Fallon. Seriously, how did that happen?

Batman has issues

I know this Digital Short from last weeks Saturday Night Live has already made the rounds this week, but I didn't want to post it until I found a non-hulu version. Seriously this is the year 2011, I'm not watching video clips with commercials in them, what is this Russia?

BTW, Steve Buscemi would have made an AMAZING Commissioner Gordon.

Well you're going to see this pretty much everywhere on the internet today. You might as well watch it here.
