The Official Ranking of the Most Bullshit Characters in Overwatch. Good list that really emphasizes one of the points I was trying to make yesterday. Every character in Overwatch is just the right amount of fun and frustrating. Of course I would have put Hanzo higher on the list. Shooting through walls is total BS, every time.

Seattle burlesque dancer cries misogyny after JetBlue deems her shorts inappropriate. Those are some really short shorts. I mean they're not really obscene or anything but it does look kind of like she's just walking around in underwear, or maybe some sort of Cosplay. The weirdest thing I took from this article is that the pilot gets final say on what the passengers can wear? That seems really arbitrary. Jet Blue should just have some sort of official dress code, leaving it up to one person seems like you're asking for trouble. Frankly, I think she should put on some longer shorts for her own health. Airplane seat do not get cleaned very well, they're kind of gross. Who would want to sit on those with bare skin. Yuck.

Shane Black On ‘The Nice Guys,’ Mel Gibson, And Why A Female ‘Iron Man 3’ Villain’s Gender Changed. I've heard the Nice Guys is really good. I really want to check it out.

FX Orders 8 Episodes of X-Men TV Show, Legion. Wow, have fun with that. Legion is a super weird character. I can't imagine anyone reading a couple stories with him in it and thinking "this character is just made for a TV show". Let's see how Wikipedia describes him:
Legion is the mutant son of Professor Charles Xavier and Gabrielle Haller. He takes the role of an antihero and has a severe mental illness, including a form of dissociative identity disorder, with each of his personas controlling one of his many superpowers
Yep, that sounds like him all right. Legion is a fun character and all, but I can't imagine reality warping powers and split personalities will make for the most accessible show. He's one of those classic X-Men foils where he can do pretty much anything right up to the point where the X-Men discover just the right MacGuffin that allows them to stop him. Your guess is as good as mine as to where this one goes.

Blizzard Says No to Sexy Butts

Strap on your tinfoil hats, we have a video game controversy brewing.

I've blogged a little bit about Overwatch recently. It's an upcoming FPS from Blizzard that's been in beta for what seems like forever. The hook with Overwatch is that instead of playing as a generic space marine or vault hunter you get too choose one of several different characters to play as, each with their own personalities and skill sets. Think Halo meets Street Fighter. While I don't have time to participate in Betas or anything, I think the game looks really cool and was hoping to try it out on my new rig when it comes out.

Enter the controversy. Someone participating in the beta complained to the Blizzard developmental team that one of the characters "victory poses" was just a gratuitous ass shot and really wasn't true to the character (see above picture, the pose on the far left). Blizzard agreed and said they were going to change the pose. I know, what you're thinking WHAT A LOAD OF HORSESHIT! I'M OFFENDED AT YOU BEING OFFENDED!

Or if you aren't a Trump supporter, you probably couldn't care less. Talk about a tempest in a teapot. If you look at all of the character designs and victory poses for Overwatch you'll find plenty of fan service, so it's not like Blizzard took away all the butts. They just changed one pose for one character. Of course this led to tons of outrage on reddit and twitter. Suddenly our first ammendment rights to look at digitally rendered asses are being trampled and if you don't agree you're just a tumblrina or dirty SJW. It's so ridiculously silly.

It's funny, since Pac-Man was corrupting the minds of the youths, video gamers have been fighting a battle over how mainstream culture looks at video games. For the most part we've come a long way but every once in a while something comes along like this that just reinforces the basement dwelling, Cheeto eating, virgin stereotypes. Good job "hardcore gamers", this is exactly the kind of attention you want your hobby to attract.

First 727 Restoration. Long story short the first 727, built over 50 years ago flew from Everett to Seattle after a lengthy restoration processes. The 727 was really the plane that cemented Boeing place as one of the worlds top airplane manufacturers. It's a neat part of aviation history and these are some cool pictures of the restoration process. Well worth a couple minutes checking out.

Erin Andrews: ESPN Forced Me To Go On TV And Talk About My Stalker. ESPN kinds sucks don't they? I'll admit when the Erin Andrews nude video story first broke I didn't really think about how awful the whole thing was. I'm kinda terrible about remembering that some celebrities are actual human beings. Reading this story really made me feel bad for Andrews, what a terrible thing to happen to a person AND to make it worse your employer doesn't really believe you? That's messed up.

5 Ways We Got The Trump Campaign Wrong: An Insider Explains. This is an interesting read on what happens behind the scenes on a campaign. As horrifying as it might be to actually imagine a president Trump it sure has been an exciting campaign season. Imagine if the only thing we had to talk about was Hillary vs Bernie... snooze.

I'm not 100% sure what this says about me but I'm a sucker for strong female leads, pretty much across all forms of entertainment. If done well this could be a really fun show to watch. I'm thinking Game of Thrones but with less talking and more stabbing... probably the same amount of cleavage.

Parallel Links

Triumph The Insult Comic Dog Vs. Canada’s Ed The Sock, And The Problem Of Parallel Creation. Good article by Vince about Ed the Sock and Triumph the Insult Comic Dog. I'm one of like 20 non-canadiens who is actually familiar with Ed the Sock and honestly the similarities between him and Triumph had never occurred to me. It's obvious the the guy behind Ed the Sock holds a grudge but I have a feeling it's only because Robert Smigel out puppeted him.

Conan O'Brien: Video Game Salesman. Conan has been doing these "Clueless Gamer" segments for a while now. It's funny I've never thought that much about them but they're clearly commercials aren't they? This last week they went all out with the launch of Fallout 4 and for the first time ever they included a disclaimer that said consideration furnished by Bethesda. I guess this is the ethics in gaming that GamerGate has been clamoring for?

I've never had a big problem when TV shows highlight their sponsors like this but I always appreciate the disclaimer. It's like when you're watching Hawaii 5-0 and every piece of tech they use is from Microsoft or every car is from Chevy. Just come clean with the fact that GM pays you to highlight their crappy compact sedans and lets get on with shooting some bad guys.

Time Warner Cable hopes to lure cord-cutters with a Roku 3 and cheap streaming. Hey, this doesn't sound so bad. If I was off living on my own I'd totally buy a cable plan like this. As it is I'm one of those people that sticks with cable (or in my case Dish Network) out of convenience. I watch almost everything off the DVR because of the kids. I'd probably be ok if I was just stuck with Hulu and Netflix but the sports man.. the sports. I live far enough away from the big city that I can't get local channels over the air and I'm not about to miss out on Seahawks and Sounders games.

2015: 42% of Women and 37% of Men Own a Video Game Console. Wow, knock me down with a feather. It doesn't surprise me in the least that women game just as much as men do but I am shocked that on average they're more likely to own a console.

RIP Metal Bikini (1983-2015)

Big rumor going around the internets yesterday is that Disney is putting the ixnay on all "Slave Leia" merchandise. I can't say this is too surprising but it's kinda surprising. On the surprise scale it's like a three and a half.

There was a bit of a kerfluffle when the Black Series Slave Leia figure shipped out a few months ago. A parent raised the internet's proverbial eyebrow with a sort of "look at the smut I found in the toy section" post to facebook. The controversy didn't have much legs because most fans understand that the Black Series of figures is marketed to adult collectors, it's not a kids toy. Yeah they keep them in the toy section but that's more of an indictment on how limiting the merchandise categories of a retail giant like Target can be. HOWEVER...

The golden metal bikini is problematic, it's a sexualized take on a strong female character in a movie that appeals to children. I don't find it offensive but that doesn't mean that there aren't people that do. In fact until that episode of Friends I didn't even know that outfit was supposed to be sexualized. I just thought the whole point of it was that Jabba was a creep. I was one square kid. Anyway, add Disney into the mix and you don't exactly have to check mapquest to see where this is headed.

In case you're unfamiliar J Scott Campbell is a comic book artist, best known for his "good girl" style of art who has worked on and off for Marvel (owned by Disney) for the last 10 years. He does a lot of special covers for Marvel and if there's some sort of ban on the Slave Leia outfit he would know because he's exactly the kind of artist that would be drawing said outfit.

So here we are. Official/Unofficial confirmation that Disney is discontinuing the Slave Leia costume. It's probably for the best but there's something in the back of my brain that is screaming at me that this is a problem. That somehow this is tied into slut shaming. That there's nothing wrong with showing a woman can be strong and sexy as long as it's not exploitative and gratuitous. I don't know anymore... Rest in Piece Slave Leia, I guess we'll always have Comic-Con.

They're Gathering Again

It's time for the most anticipated infomercial of the year. The annual Gathering of the Juggalos video. This year's video comes to us from the FUTURE. A future where I assume cool things like the ICP and Faygo have been outlawed so it's up to one intrepid group of ninjas to travel back in time to the 2015 Gathering of the Juggalos and I don't know... save the future Faygo? This thing is 20 minutes long I didn't have time to watch it all this morning.

I think I say this every year, but man I really want to go to this thing. Think of how awesome the people (?) watching must be. Sure there's a 50/50 chance I never make it back but Anybody Killa and Nova Rockafeller are going to be there. I'm pretty sure it's worth taking the chance.

Nerdy Girl Beats Guys Up At The Gym

Muy Thai Champion Germaine Yeap went to a gym pretending to be a nerdy girl who couldn't throw a punch. Actually to be more specific the owner of the gym brought her in specifically to prank his new Muy Thai trainers. It's not like she just goes around duping poor unsuspecting bros at the gym. Then again maybe she does. I don't know anything about Muy Thai.

Submarine Links

The Best Hidden Features of VLC. VLC is great, I've been using it for a while to play ripped DVDs and Blu Rays that I may or may not be acquiring through illicit means. I had no idea it had so many other uses. Like did you know you can use it to save youtube clips? Or stream out of area MLS matches in HD? Seriously I saved myself a ton of cash by using VLC to watch the Sounders in the playoffs this year.

Which I wouldn't have had to do if the MLS hadn't signed such a terrible TV deal with NBC sports.. jeez they are the worst.

11 Wonderful Former Disney Rides. I can't believe the Submarine voyage is gone. I haven't been to Disneyland since I was 12 but I can't believe Submarine Voyage isn't there anymore! That's one of like 4 rides I vividly remember. Next thing you'll tell me is that the Swiss Family Robinson house isn't there anymore.. NOOOOOO!! I don't want to hear it!

25 Movies Every Man Should See. This list is a little too "Maxim's definition of manly" for me, but there's no denying that there are a lot of great movies on it. Rio Bravo in particular is a fantastic movie that a lot of doofus kids probably wouldn't watch because it's too slow or John Wayne is too fat. Stupid kids, get off my lawn.

Stand By Me - Then and Now. Speaking of slow movies that kids these days probably wouldn't appreciate. This Then and Now photo gallery of locations from Stand by Me is really interesting. It's kind of depressing to see a few of the run down locations look even more run down after 25 years. Seriously Brownsville, get your act together.

Are These Provocative Ads For Coca-Cola’s New Milk Product Sexist? First off the very idea that Coca-Cola is getting into the milk business is kind of gross. I can't wait until clear milk, or new milk and then the return to milk classic. Also once one person says these adds look like some kind of porno all you're going to see is semen. Semen everywhere....

7 Ways to Compliment Breasts

We've all had that moment where we think someone is talking or waving to us and it turns out they're really talking to the person behind us. This video is just 2 minutes of that and it's hilarious. Even better, if you go over to youtube to watch it some of the comments are gold:

Marvel is literally covering their asses

Remember a couple months ago when Spider-Woman's butt felt like the biggest story in comic books? Well Marvel has finally decided on a cheeky solution to the controversy. They covered Spider-Woman's ass with the title (pictured above). I guess everyone can go back to complaining about the shit-show the Fantastic Four movie is turning into. Nothing to see here.

Spider-Woman's Big Ass is a Big Deal!

Maddox who you might remember from the early years of the web and the website The Best Page in the Universe Posted a pretty epic response to the critics of Milo Manara's Spider-Woman #1 variant cover. I don't 100% buy into what he's saying here, comics are a commodity, a business. If your customer says something is offensive, guess what? It just became offensive. They might be totes wrong but if you're marvel would you rather be right or would you rather sell comic books.

However I LOVE the rant he goes on about sexuality and sexism. The knee jerk reaction to "OMG this cover is to sexy women won't like it" is TOTALLY sexist. I'm not saying that doesn't mean there's some merit to it, I'm just saying that assuming all women are asexual flowers who only like playing with My Little Pony and Easy Bake Ovens is total horseshit. Also horseshit is Elle complaining about ANYTHING. What a giant bunch of hypocrites.

And with all that being said, I still don't like the cover.

If Geek Girls Acted Like Geek Guys

As loathe as I am to post anything from Buzzfeed this video that's been making the rounds is pretty funny. I especially liked the cosplay jokes. She is right, If you dress up as sexy Khal Drago you're kind of asking for it.

This sort of dovetails off something I said last week. The amount of shit some ladies have to go through to enjoy something that's supposedly "for boys" is awful. I certainly have never understood it at comic book shops. Owning a comic book shop isn't exactly a license to print money, they should be bending over backwards for ANY customer that walks in the door.

Who sexed up Spider-Woman and does it matter?

About a week or two ago Marvel announced a couple new titles, one of which was a new Spider-Woman book. No big deal, right? I mean there's a handful of really adamant Spider-Woman fans out there but Marvel has something like 6 different female driven comics right now and what feels like a dozen different Spider-Man books. A new Spider-Woman book should have just been a regular announcement, but it wasn't. The image above is why.

What you're looking at is the preview of an alternate cover by renowned European (ie erotic) artist Milo Manara. Now let me preface everything I say here by saying I'm a slight fan of Manara's work. I have I think all of two or three comics he's drawn and I have a couple Milo Manara pictures in my "unsorted reference picture" folder on my computer at home. I'm what you'd call a lowercase fan. Anyway, the point here is that holy cow this cover is receiving a lot of negative attention, mostly on comic/geeky blogs but in a couple buzzfeed like places too.

Obviously the cover by Manara is provocative, I can't imagine that it wasn't supposed to be. When you hire someone with the pedigree of Milo Manara you know you're going to get a sexy cover but I don't think there would be as big of an uproar if this was just a sexy cover. The reader's eye is immediately drawn to her ass or more specifically to the super-wedgie she's sporting. It pushes this from what many would consider sexy to near obscene. It doesn't feel very powerful either, the way she's on all fours with her butt in the air it comes across as pretty submissive. More sex doll than superhero.

Just for fun, let's contrast that cover to the way she's been drawn in some of her most recent and memorable appearances:

My point here is that Spider-Woman is not exactly the most demure character ever created. That's not to excuse the Manara cover, I don't really like the cover. Marvel as of late has made a big push to attract female readership, isn't a cover like this by an artists like Manara the exact kind of thing that pushes away female readers? Well, that's why I tried to include some context.

I'm not 100% sure Marvel was targeting female readers with a Spider-Woman series. I have a feeling that Spider-Woman was aimed directly at the stereotypical fanboy, the one with Cheetos stained fingers and impure thoughts about She Hulk. Those guys still exist, and they have money too. As much as I love the current She Hulk or Ms Marvel books I'm sure there are plenty of readers that wish Ms. Marvel (now Captain Marvel) was still fighting crime in thigh-high boots and a swimsuit. Should Marvel completely ignore those guys?

That was an honest question, I don't have an answer. Does Marvel have anything to gain making books for the stereotypical fanboy? Does a near vulgar alternate cover (lets remember it's the alternate cover not the one you will see on comixology) alienate a large untapped group of readers? The cynic in me says that a Spider-Woman solo title was dead in the water anyway and probably won't last more than 12 issues. This might not be the kind of attention Marvel thought they were going to get but I doubt they're that upset about it. Attention is the exact reason you hire Milo Manara to draw alternate covers in the first place.

To sum up, I have very little opinion on the matter. I'll leave you with a picture of Spider-Man in a similar pose (spandex wedgie included) and the question. If this cover was the exact same, with Spider-Woman swapped in for Spider-Man, same pose and everything, would it look like the Spider was about to mount her?

Does that illustrate a difference in what you can get away with drawing male vs female superheroes? Is that sexism? These questions and more answered probably never...

She Hulk is a Porn Star and you're a nerd. Deal

A couple days ago David Goyer (co-writer of Nolan's Batman Trilogy and writer of the upcoming Man of Steel 2: Electric Boogaloo) was on some podcast I've never heard of and he had some disparaging words for a couple comic book characters, most notably She Hulk.
“The Hulk was this classic male power fantasy. It’s like, most of the people reading comic books were these people like me who were just these little kids getting the shit kicked out of them every day, and so then they created She-Hulk, right? [...] I think She-Hulk is the chick that you could f–k if you were Hulk, you know what I’m saying? She-Hulk was the extension of the male power fantasy. So it’s like if I’m going to be this geek who becomes the Hulk then let’s create a giant green porn star that only the Hulk could f–k.”

Then he went on to ask for everyone to clap if they knew who the Martian Manhunter was. Then when a couple people clapped he asked how many of them had ever been laid. THEN he proceeded to shit all over Martian Manhunter and he proposed a new origin for MANHUNTER that sounded an awful lot like the plot of Species II.

So there you go. David Goyer is kind of an asshat and doesn't know shit about comic books. Are there people that sexualize She Hulk? Of course there are. There are weirdos out there that sexualize every comic book character but Stan Lee created her so Marvel would own the trademark when there was an idea floating around to spin off the Lou Ferrigno TV show with a female Hulk. Frankly She Hulk is kind of a bad ass and probably a better female role model than some more well known characters like Wonder Woman or Catwoman.

I'm not one of those nerds that thinks movies based on comics need to slavishly adhere to the source material but it's nice to think that the people creating these movies at least respect the material. It's clear that Goyer thinks comics are stupid and harbors a typical too cool for school level of contempt for people that read them. I like Ben Affleck and all but I'm kinda hoping that Man of Steel 2 tanks just so DC will kick Goyer to the curb. I know that won't happen but seriously that guy can get bent.

Dungeons & Links

10 Dungeons & Dragons Tips From Dan Harmon and His Dungeon Master. When the kids are out of the house or at least old enough to not need constant supervision/help with their legos I'm totally taking up D&D. I've already got a t-shirt and everything. What more do you need? Dice? I have dice. Pencil? I've got a pencil. Imagination? Sure when I've been drinking I'm SUPER IMAGINATIVE.

The Millennium Falcon. Do you have 60 seconds to read a really brief infographic on the Millennium Falcon? Well you are in luck then because I happen to have a link to just such an infographic right here.

Battlefield 4 Players Have Finally Found The Megalodon. This is pretty fun. Rumor had it that if you looked hard enough you could find a Megalodon in Battlefield 4. Well, that wasn't exactly true so the developers added one in the latest DLC pack. You win this one Megalodon.

Art and Superheroines: Getting Sex and Cape Comics Right. I don't 100% agree with this article on sex and comic books (more specifically superhero comics) but I think it brings up a lot of interesting points. Comic Books have this really typical american puritanical approach to sex and violence that you see in movies and TV. Cleavage? Cool. Blood and Gore? Cool. Realistic depictions of sex? Whoa there's pervert. Think of the Children!

Also he talks about Empowered a lot which is cool. I like Empowered. I'm only like 7 trades behind but I swear I'll be picking more up any day now.

Too much Puff not enough Power with these girls

Yesterday it was announced that Cartoon Network was pulling the plug on a special alternate cover of Powerpuff Girls #6 (published by IDW). They said they had received a complaint(s?) about the sexual nature of the cover (shown above, duh) and thought it was best to just pull it from the shelves.

What followed was a bit of back and forth between the offended and the unoffended with a lot of other nerds throwing in their 2 cents. Speaking of nerds throwing in their 2 cents...

I'm not offended at all by the cover (I've drawn far far worse) but I understand how some would think it inappropriate for a comic about children geared towards them. The publisher and in this case more importantly the editor, need to recognize the books target demo and make sure that everything is kosher. I feel bad for the artist because she drew what she was paid to draw, in the style she normally draws in. Like I said, I think her editor really dropped the ball by accepting the cover in the first place. You look at the cover for 2 seconds and your eye is drawn to the near upskirt shot of the pink ranger (they're like power rangers right?).

Here's how to fix this problem before it even started. Change the horizon line on the page by about an inch. There's almost no way you can draw a girl sitting in a skirt that short from below without it turning into an upskirt shot. I know, I've drawn a girl sitting in a skirt that short before.

See how less pervy it is (minus the huge boobs) when you can't see the bottom curve of the leg? It's at least 90% less pervy. I'd almost argue that I drew Supergirl's skirt shorter than the Powerpuff girl's skirt but because you're looking at it from a slightly higher angle it looks more conservative.

Long story short, IDW should totes hire me to draw some Powerpuff girls covers. My rates are dirt cheap.

Best, Sluttiest and Weirdest Store-Bought Halloween Costumes for 2013. I love these 1966 Batman TV Show inspired costumes. I might buy one just for fun. Casual Fridays at work and all..

Clarissa Explains All The Drugs She Did. Back in the day when I was young and single, having a subscription to Maxim sounded like a good idea. I vividly remember the Melissa Joan Hart issue. Kinda sad to hear she was all hopped up on drugs when she did it. Still not as sad as the Melissa and Joey TV show. That was clearly rock bottom.

NBA Jam Was Rigged Against The Chicago Bulls. I LOVE this, screw the Michael Joranless Chicago Bulls. There was nothing worse then getting beaten by Scottie Pippin and f'ing Horace Grant. Not that I was ever getting beaten or anything. At the machine by my house I had the record for the longest winning streak and best winning percentage. 16-0 Baby!

6 Sexist Video Game Problems Even Bigger Than the Breasts. The second to last one on this list is the one that really grinds my gears. There's no reason there shouldn't be more playable female characters in video games. I have a daughter now this sexist nonsense is important to me now!

Also I've heard the last Tomb Raider game is really good.

Battlefield Friends: Girl Gamer

I've spent enough time on Xbox live to attest that this is a pretty accurate portrayal of a girl joining an on-line match. Even guys that mean well start slobbering all over them and become total fools. It's awful enough to drive me out of most matches. In fact if I had to rank the most annoying Xbox gamers I'd rank them thus:

Guys that play music in the background

Guys that eat while on the mic

kids calling everyone fags

dudes that can't stop slobbering over girls

anyone using the n-word

So there's your lesson for the day. Single guys, don't be that guy. You're not going to meet a girl playing Halo, just enjoy the game.

The LFL is dead, long live the LFL!

After a year hiatus The Lingerie Football league is no more. However the LEGENDS Football League is totally a thing now. Gone are the skimpy uniforms, replaced by less frilly skimpy uniforms. Gone are the old team names and logos, in are the same team names and slightly different logos? I don't know, what am I the lingerie football ombudsman?

What I do know, is that only serious athletes give interviews to Fox News in their uniforms.

Serious athletes.

Here come the new X-Women X-Men

Yesterday Marvel made a relatively big splash in the small pool that is comic books by announcing a new X-Men title comprised entirely of X-ladies. The series is going to be written by Brian Wood and drawn by Olivier Coipel. I don't think I've ever read anything Wood has written but Coipel is one of my favorite artists so I'll definitely give the book a try.

This is the second comic with an all female line up Marvel has announced in the last couple month (Fearless Defenders was the other) and it all comes on the heels of the critical success they seem to be having with the Captain Marvel reboot. I've seen varying numbers over how many women read comics (usually from 10-30 percent of the overall readership) so I guess it makes sense that Marvel would reach out to them. Although an argument could be made that girls don't necessarily want to read comics all about girls anymore than guys want to read comics all about guys. Still, a demo is a demo, and Marvel has always been behind DC when it comes to the success of its female heroes.

I'm more excited for the book because it looks to be a throwback to the Claremont stories of the 1980's without actually involving Chris Claremont. Also I'm a sucker for punk rock Storm.
