The Group Therapy Tour: The Review

So with some prodding from my wife and the help of a buddy at work I actually went out and saw a rap show last night. It was the Group Therapy tour: Schaffer the Darklord, Adam WarRock and Tribe one plus local guests Beefy and Death*Star. Now for a bit of context I'm not really a "going out" kind of guy. My friend Mike laughed at me when I was amazed at how my drivers licence glowed under the blacklight when they took our money at the door. I'm pretty sure the last time I had been in a club that need to see ID was about 8 years ago and the last time I actually saw a concert was nearly 17 year ago.

editors note: the following is in no ways a review or analysis of the content of any of the performers songs. All of these guys are quote unquote nerdcore rappers and what they do best is take pop culture references (specifically geeky ones) and layer them over stories of fear, acceptance, love, regret, etc. Essentially sometimes a song about Magneto is more than just a song about Magneto. Either you love this kind of music or you don't.

The Show was at the Lo-Fi in kinda-downtown Seattle. It's a big club? small club? I don't know. Like I said, zero frame of reference. There were at least 100 people there, probably more, and while it was pretty packed in front of the stage I didn't have to wait in line for a beer or to go to the bathroom. For someone who literally had to take anxiety medication to go out it was a pretty ideal crowd to space ratio. It probably helped that we sat up in this balcony area overlooking the stage that was mostly empty all night. I'm pretty sure most people either didn't know about it or thought it was off limits.

Beefy opened the show. He sounded great, I'm guessing he hasn't performed in a while as he forgot some lines a couple of times. Whatever, he played like 3 of my favorite songs so I didn't care. Tribe One went on next, he killed it. He did the two songs I really wanted to hear (Devil Rhymeosaur and I'm kind of a big Deal) so I was thrilled. After a short break Death*Star played. I had never even heard of Death*Star but they were pretty entertaining. They were a bit looser than everyone else but they had great energy and a live DJ so they get bonus points from me. In a way they were sort of a perfect middle act.

After another short break Adam WarRock went on. Not to say anything negative about the guys that went on before him because I thought everyone sounded great, but man... it's hard to describe but the energy and skill he showed, he was just on another level. It was a really great set. My only nitpick is that I wish he had played more songs off his new album. I guess it's tough coming up with a set list that will please everyone when you recorded over 100 songs in a year.

Schaffer the Darklord closed the show. Earlier in the night Adam WarRock had mentioned that Schaffer is every nerdcore rappers favorite live act. I know why. Killed it doesn't even begin to describe how good he was. I've had to re-write these couple sentences about a dozen times trying to describe it. Some performers suck live, like you watch them on SNL and you're like "jeez this stinks". STD's songs didn't just sound like the albums they sounded better. The extra emotion and energy he brought to each song while still being able to actually rap everything coherently was ridiculous. Half way through his last song I just threw up my hands and had to look away. The way he was delivering every line was just filthy. It was really amazing.

TL/DR The opening night of the Group Therapy Tour was rad and if you live on the West Coast you should check it out.

Microsoft to Gamers: You don't know what you don't know yet so turn it down a notch.

I swear I'm not trying to turn this into a Xbone blog but other than me seeing Star Trek in Darkness this weekend not much else has been going on. The latest is that Microsoft, through both official and unofficial outlets are telling gamers they have it all wrong when it comes to the details of the Xbox One.

First off was a vague statement about the need for a constant internet connection. The official party line is ""It does not have to be always connected, but Xbox One does require a connection to the Internet." So no confusion there, right? Even at the kick-off event there are stories of Microsoft PR reps contradicting each other. The last I read is that Xbone will be able to go for extended periods of time unconnected, possibly with the help of some sort of pass or code. Lan partiers everywhere rejoice. Of course actual details will follow.

Gamestop patrons will also be happy to learn that Microsoft has plans to work with them to keep the used game market viable. You're also going to be able to trade your games in direct to Microsoft and your still going to be able to take your copy of Mortal Kombat 36 over to a friends house and play it there. So long as you're logged in on their xbone with your live account the game will play. Of course actual details will follow.

Privacy freaks also need to calm the f down. The new Kinnect will have a privacy mode that keeps Microsoft from recording you while you watch Baywatch reruns alone in the dark. Actual details will follow.

The point of all of this is that Microsoft has answers for everything and if you question them you're either a troublemaker or a hater, maybe a h8r. Of course these responses are not an admission that Microsoft bungled their kick-off event. Far from it.... Mocapped Dawgz!

Last week Adam WarRock was giving away free music and not just any music, songs inspired by Game of Thrones. Go grab them so the next time you take me to lunch we can bump Hodor in the whip. Also I'll need you to buy me lunch. Thanks!

Watch the Links

7 Video Games That Are Going To Be Surprisingly Successful In 2013. I haven't even heard of this Remember Me game, it looks fantastic. It also looks like one of those "next gen" games everyone is waiting for. There's just no way this thing is running on an Xbox 360 or PS3, it has to be a high end PC rig.

Video Games are a Bigger Problem than Guns. Says a US Senator. Clearly we shouldn't be arming soldiers with assault rifles, we should give them copies of Mortal Kombat and Doom II. (sigh) I'm all for a serious conversation about the impact of movies and tv shows and video games on the youth of America, but the people that are in the NRA's pocket are acting like fools. No study has definitively linked violent video games with violent behavior. In fact there's pretty good empirical evidence that as our entertainment has become more violent over the years actual violence has gone down. But whatever, comics had to go through a similar witch hunt in the 50s and they got through that. Video Games will be just fine.

Adam WarRock's 'Watch The Throne (X)' Is The Next Mutation Of Hip Hop. This isn't as good as his X-factor EP or the recently released Mjolnir single, but it's still free Adam WarRock. Seriously, it's free. All you have to do is right click and save. What are you still doing here?

Well Endowed Mortal Kombat Kitana Mousepad. I'm pretty sure this would get me fired at work and divorced at home but if you want to get one, please be my guest. Nothing weird about that at all.

Kirby Krackle: Live in Seattle

Yesterday Seattle's own Kirby Krackle released an album titled Live in Seattle. It's awesome and you should really go download it. Like Right now. Go ahead I'll wait..

Ok, At the very least you should hit play on the above youtube clip. If after watching them perform Roll Over with Adam WarRock you still don't want to download the album then you can tell me why you don't like nice things and we can re-examine what our friendship is based on.

Again, this is why I don't really review things.

Adam WarRock, When the Winter Comes

I queued up this Game of Thrones song from uber-nerd Adam WarRock a couple weeks ago and never actually posted it. Often I see something at night that I want to post the following day, so I'll put half a post together really quickly and save it for later. Every once in a while I never follow up on those and something I really should have posted will get missed.

I guess what I'm saying, is enjoy this awesome song that you probably already heard about.

Adam WarRock's Waka Flocka Swanson

One of my favorite Nerdcore rappers Adam WarRock recently recorded a tribute EP all about the TV show Parks & Rec. It's not quite as good as his Firefly EP but it's better than the X-Factor one. Of course this song about Ron Swanson is off the heezy yo.

Off the heezy, that's stll a thing right?

download the entire parks and rec ep here.
