This last weekend I saw a gallery of these Real Vs Movie Scientist cartoons and thought they were good enough to share. I'll be honest, one of my favorite parts of a bad movie is when real science is thrown out the window and fake science becomes crucial to the plot. Like uploading a virus to an alien computer using a MacBook or humans being used as living batteries.
A couple weeks ago I discovered there was a youtube app for the Roku, it's a bit clunky but it has this nice browsing feature that shows you trending videos in different categories. Early this morning while I was trying to get my daughter to fall back asleep I was dinking around on it and I caught the trailer for Automata. Aside from a horrible 5 seconds of Melanie Griffith's acting it looks really really cool. Unsurprisingly the indie I Robot rip off will probably be better than the Offical hollywood blockbuster I Robot adaption.
What do you think, will we see bipedal robots like these in our lifetime? How about artificial intelligence that's self aware? When you think about how far we've come with computers and technology in just the last 30 years it doesn't seem completely crazy, does it?
I'm not saying you should start prepping for the robot apocalypse now but maybe you should start thinking about it. Once robots realize what bastards humans are, it won't take them that long to go full skynet on us.
Here's another fun violent short sci-fi film from Machinima. This one I've watched half of before I had to get to work this morning. I actually thought the first person camera work was not bad. Usually I feel like that trick is stupid and cheap but since this is an homage to a video game I thought it worked well. I do sort of doubt that a cigar cutter could really take off a finger. You'd cut someone to the bone but unless you were at a joint I doubt it would go all the way through. Totes unrealistic.
One of the panels I went to this weekend at Emerald City Comic Con (more on that later) was a Q&A with Eliza Dushku. She wasn't as entertaining as Richard Dean Anderson but she was a lot nicer to look at. She talked quite a bit about this short film called The Gable 5. I haven't watched it yet but a room full of nerds thought it was good. Ok, maybe just the 1/4 of the room that had seen it.
I guess this is the week to premier your second trailer, eh?
I'm still firmly on the fence over this one. So far both trailers for Ender's Game sure seem to put the emphasis on super space action and adults talking to each other. Two things that the books aren't really big on. Don't get me wrong, the action scenes look pretty cool but if you read Ender's Game and you really think its a book about space combat, you've pretty much missed the point. Something Hollywood is far to good at when it comes to classic science fiction books.
I'm already totes behind on posting this week. The new car has a couple bugaboos so it had to go to the shop and that means carpooling which means shorter work days which means doing more work during those work days but it still means getting home from work later because carpooling takes forever. I was going to jump all over a Comic-Con cosplay post but instead you get a trailer for the reboot of Cosmos with Neil Degrasse Tyson.
I can't believe this thing is going to be on Fox. Stations in the south are going to boycott it aren't they?
Here's the first TV spot for the new Riddick movie, conveniently enough called Riccick. It looks like they're going back to alien monsters in the dark and abandoning the whole alien neuromancer politics thing no one cared about. Looks good to me, but if I was Katie Sackhoff I'd watch my back. The last blonde girl that fell for Riddick ended up getting stabbed in the back.
And no, I will not let that go. Pitch Black totes ends with Vin Diesel killing that girl so he can get away from the alien monsters. There's no other logical explanation.
Here's a trailer for the new Neil Blomkamp (District 13, Canceled Halo movie) sci-fi romp, Elysium. It looks really good. Dystopian and Idealistic futures, Robot butlers, cybernetic enhancements, Matt Damon with a bald head, it really has it all. And I mean that in a good way, not an a mocking the World War Z trailer kinda way.
As I alluded to earlier, Blomkamp was supposedly the guy to direct the much delayed and canceled Halo movie. After watching this it's hard to imagine he would have done a bad job of it. I know Doom with Duane the Rock Johnson set a pretty high bar for movie versions of First Person Shooters but I think Blomkamp might have been the director to top it.
Until yesterday, I hadn't heard anything about this new Tom Cruise movie, Oblivion. It looks pretty cool, I'm always down for a good post apocalyptic yarn. Hopefully this will have a bit more punch that say The Book of Eli did.
I know Tom Cruise is crazy in real life, but I still totally dig him as an actor. Name me one bad Tom Cruise movie that didn't also star Cameron Diaz or feature a beach boys song in the soundtrack? See you can't. 2 points me.
Here's the first trailer for the new Star Trek movie. It looks pretty good so far, I'm digging Sherlock as the villain this time around. There's two versions of this trailer floating around out there, the US version and the international version. The international version I posted here has like 4 extra seconds of footage in it. So there you are.
Gangnam Style, Dissected. I swear I spent 2 hours this morning listening to K-pop on youtube while I contemplated quitting my job. Anyhoo, here's PSY's amazeballs video Gangnam Style. After you're done watching it and you've changed your shorts, go read The Atlantic's breakdown so you'll know what it all meant.
Also, Korean Ben at the 1:55 mark.
Why Do Some People Think Neil Armstrong Never Walked On The Moon. Right now, I can watch an entire season of My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic on my freaking cell phone. How can anyone doubt we don't have the technology to get to the moon? How do you think they get My Little Pony on my phone in the first place? It comes from the moon, duh.
... and was filled with chocolate! Ok, not really.
MinutePhysics explains briefly why you can't travel through the earth, and how we'd pretty much all die without the molten iron core. Interesting stuff. It's a lot less depressing than thinking about how we just set a new record for the lowest level of Arctic sea ice observed since we started doing such a thing.
If you're anything like me you spent most of last night watching reruns of Nova while trying to fix your computer using parts from 2 dead computers (one of which actually has scorch marks on it). After watching all that Nova you can imagine my pleasant surprise this morning when I saw this video of astrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson proclaiming the original Star Trek Enterprise to be the greatest space ship in sci-fi history.
If tomorrow morning I see a video where Brian Greene declares who would win in a fight between Batman and Captain America my mind grapes might just explode.
Gas stations don't really make money on gas. Not only is this a great article on the economics of a gas station, in the comments section you'll find a terrific discussion on gas prices as a whole. Spoilers, every politician ever is lying to you about the price of gas.
Microsoft plans to further monetize xbox live users. So this rumor thing hit the web that in the 4th quarter of 2012 Microsoft is rolling out a plan to "further monetize" xbox live. No details or anything, just a vague reference in someone's linkedin profile. I can't believe there's so much outrage. You don't have to pay for xbox live you know. I'd rather have the option of paying a little more for xbox live than Microsoft just arbitrarily jacking up the prices on consoles or games.
The Destructoid Battlefield 3 review. This is easily my favorite review of Battlefield 3, it's also one of the worst reviews I've seen for the game. Now don't get me wrong, I'm enjoying the hell out of it (every night from 10pm to midnight, xbox live gamer tag KevFun. hit me up yo!) but it is a flawed game that I wouldn't recommend to everyone.
4 Sci-Fi series Netflix should bring back. I really like the idea of Netflix picking up the rights to some canceled shows but I'm afraid we'd get less Arrested Development and more Ghost Whisperer or CSI Miami. What do you mean CSI Miami is still on the air? Are you sure?
10 Badass bikes from Nerd-dom. Good list with 2 exceptions. Kaneda's bike needs to be way higher and why no love for Cy-Kill?
5 easy ways 2 Broke Girls could improve itself. This show sucks sooo hard, I can't believe anyone actually enjoys it. They should just cancel it and put Kat Dennings on something good like Cougar Town.
The guest and worst of RAW 9/19. Wolverine (or Hugh Jackman) showed up on RAW last night to help put over internet sensation woo woo woo Zack Ryder. It was the only time ever my wife hasn't rolled her eyes when I turned the channel to wrestling.
10 biggest missed opportunities in Sci-Fi and fantasy. Number one for me here is the Joss Wheadon Wonder Woman movie and it's not just because I want to see Eliza Dushku dressed as Wonder Woman. Wait.. yes, yes it is.
The internet's most dangerous celeb is Heidi Klum. Someone somewhere has determined that 1 in 10 internet searches for Heidi Klum lead to viruses or malware. I have never been more scared doing a search for an image to go with an article than I've been right here.
Why we're building a post-apocalyptic electric car. I've often thought of what Car I'd jack in robot-zombie apocalypse. I've always thought the Honda Ridgeline with a canopy would be a good bet. I figure whatever you go with it has to be a 4x4, for navigating downed power polls and piles of corpses. A 4 door truck with a canopy seems ideal, you can keep all your stuff dry but you don't have to sleep with the fumes from the spare gas cans. Plus the rear seat will double as a bed in a pinch. I picked the Ridgeline because a Honda just seems more reliable than anything else, plus it's got ridiculously high sides which has to be good keeping you safe from the zombie hordes. In closing, I think about zombies way too much.
You know the drill, It's Tuesday and on Tuesday I like to highlight a different tumblr blog. It's quick, it's easy and I figure if I do it enough someday someone somewhere will link to my blog.
My name is Kevin and I blog, mostly about nerdy stuff. I'm old enough to know that Gobots came before Transformers and geeky enough to care.
If you have something cool or nerdy you just have to share, e-mail me at kevin @ devildinosaur.com
