The idea that replacing a working car with a new one that gets better gas mileage is somehow good for the environment is daft. Carbon emissions aren't the end all and be all of good environmental stewardship. Recycling and reusing what we already have is always better than needlessly upgrading to something greener.
Lets put it this way... You wouldn't take your 2 year old Plasma to the dump just because you can get a new LED TV that draws half the power. Or if you would you're an idiot and don't deserve money from the government.

I bought a 1999 Ford Taurus for 350.00, and then when the brakes wore out, and I messed up the rotor, the oil gasket needed replacing, the oil pan was messed, fuel pump issue, as gas was leaking from the tailpipe, I sold it for 1000.00 and bought a 1992 Toyota Corolla for $650. I am glad that I didn't have to do anything to the Ford Taurus after driving it for only 7900kms, I was able to get rid of it for 1000, and get a Toyota Corolla out of it as profit.
