Valve made the last of their big announcements last week and it wasn't Half Life 3. It wasn't even Half Life 2: Episode 3. It was this ugly ass controller for their upcoming console/PC Steam Machines. I don't want to tell Valve how to do their business but come on, no one is going to use this. They're just going to keep using Xbox 360 controllers because even with the janky d-pad it's still the best controller out there. No one is going to use the buttonless monstrosity. It's like the Kinnect for your thumbs.

Wow, totally had the opposite reaction. I thought it looked _very_ interesting, the first really nice new controller in ages and ages. I never warmed to the Xbox controller, preferring the PS2 one. It always felt too large and clunky like the Dreamcast one, and the analog sticks being on the diagonal instead of next to each other never seemed quite right.
I'm just not sold on using touchpad technology over actual buttons and sticks but I'm kind of a stick in the mud when it comes to new tech.
I like the way the xbox controller feels in my hand better, but you're right the placement of the analog sticks has always bothered me too.
