G.I. Joe: Cobra

So last Friday I took a long lunch and went to ye old Comic Book Shop (more specifically Dreamstrands in greenwood) and I picked up a couple issues of GI Joe: Cobra (I'm dropping the periods in GI because typing them is a butt). I've been hearing for the last few months that this book is pretty awesome but it wasn't until I saw a piece of art from it last week that I finally decided to pick up a couple issues.

Yeah, that's Cobra Commander eating lead. Not dying in an avalanche or disappearing in a plane crash. That is him straight up getting shot in the face. Like most man-children of my generation I've been a GI Joe fan for forever and have a lot of love for these characters. Killing off one of the big names is going to get my attention, which I'm guessing was the whole point of this, right?

As it turns out, the attention was well warranted, this is an outstanding book. I can't recommend it enough. Never in a thousand years would I have thought I would enjoy a comic book where Cobra Commander waxes philosophic about cognitive dissonance (to Chuckles of all Joes) for 30 pages. If you're headed over to my house anytime soon try and borrow these. If you don't actually know me please do not come over to my house.

Dave is wrong, the GI Joe movie will suck terribly

Yeah that's right... there's your first look at Cobra Commander (sure it's toy form, but it totally counts) in the new GI Joe: Rise of Cobra movie. Now I'll give the producers a bit more slack than your average nerd will. The fact that Cobra Commander is played by Joseph Gordon Levitt (of 3rd rock from the sun and 10 things I hate about you fame) is in my opinion kinda cool. He was pretty awesome in Brick, and Commander is supposed to be a bit of a weasel anyway.

But come on... you have to draw the line somewhere. His costume looks like ass. Don't take my word for it, here's what a few commenter at toplessrobot.com have to say.

"AND HIS HEAD IS A GIANT CRUNCHBERRY."

"Was this the result of another brilliant idea by the Deadpool redesign guy? Good job, douche."
"Fuck! How hard is it to just cut a couple of eyeholes in a piece of blue cloth."

"Oh sweet a jason X Sequel!"

"*shoots self*"

There you go, nice job capturing your target audience Paramount. Just throw in a couple more Wayans brothers in it and I'm sure it'll all even out.

an awesome glimps of what could have been.
