It's official, Marvel has named James Gunn as the director and co-writer for the upcoming Guardians of the Galaxy movie. While Gunn isn't exactly Senor Spielbergo it's not like his IMDB is full of hits. He's directed Slither and Super, he co-wrote the Scooby-Doo movie and hes worked on a lot of Troma movies.. ummm... he wrote the script for the video game Chainsaw Lollipop. So that's nice, I guess. Anyway what I'm getting at is that this guy's no John Favreau and lets face it before Iron Man John Favreau was a pretty low bar.
Whatever, if he's talented who cares, right? I'd rather some guy who's done a bunch of movies I've never seen (minus Scooby-Doo) than McG of more Brett Ratner.
The thing I really can't believe is that Marvel has decided to throw 100+ million dollars at a Guardians of the Galaxy Movie. Don't get me wrong, I love the GOTG, I think I have all 4 trade paperbacks of the new series but that's just it, GOTG was canceled like a year ago. I think there are just 4 trade paperbacks. It's an interesting place for Marvel to go when there are teams and characters with a much larger history sitting on the shelf waiting to be used. Some that might even be recognizable to the average non-comic reading moviegoer (Hercules, Spider-Woman, Dr. Strange).
I really hope the movie does well, like I said I really like the Guardians and a hit might open the doors for more diverse comic book movies. Anything that might get DC and Warner Brothers off their ass would be awesome, Seriously, where's my Wonder Woman movie?
