For whatever reason there were a lot of Xbox 720 rumors flying around today. It's kinda silly to start speculating on a console that first off won't be called 720 and secondly, is at least 2 years away. However that doesn't mean we shouldn't do it. What else are we going to do? All these TPS reports? pshaw

The big rumor here is that the new Xbox will have some sort of built in feature that will prevent it from playing used games. As someone that picks up used games all the time, I have no emoticon that expresses my frustration with this rumor.

I get the problem the video game industry has with the used game market. Every time someone buys a used game the publisher gets nothing, but how is that any different that say a car, or a book, or a DVD copy of Hard Ticket to Hawaii? Once I have bought a copy it's mine to do with as I please. If I want to let a friend borrow it, or get ripped off selling it to Gamestop, that's my prerogative.

The only way I can see the general gaming public not losing their shit about this is if they decided that in 2013 we're ready to skip the discs all together and just go with digital copies of games. I'm sure that won't get anyone's bandwidth throttled.

If you've been paying attention, and I don't know why you would, you've probably noticed a significant lack of activity here. Last week during snowpocalypsemaggedeon 2012 my house lost power for about 4 days. Then, the day after we got it restored, I had to report for federal jury duty.

I didn't get sellected for a jury because I'm super racist against white people but I still lost precious blogging hours. It will probably take me a couple of days to get back into the swing of things. I mean all these TPS reports aren't going to file themselves.

Mad Catz releases a high end customizable controler. I remember Mad Catz as the company that made all those awful N64 controllers back in the day. Thank goodness they survived the 90s, because they now make the most gorgeous controller I've ever seen. It's modular by design so you can swap out the dpad for the thumbsticks or vice versa. You can get concave or rounded thumbsticks and there are a couple different dpad options.

Now someone give me $100 so I can afford one.

Avengers vs X-Men promo art is coming

The nerds over at CBR got their sweaty little hands on some new promo art for Marvel's super-mega crossover: Avengers vs X-Men. It's all really good, I mean that's not a big surprise. Marvel made sure they had some of the better artists out there lined up for this. The interesting thing here (in my nerdy mind) is some of the fights shown. Storm just joined the X-men, and here she's battling Thor who just died. So either the writers are pulling a DC and wilfully throwing out continuity or Thor's going to be back soon and Storm isn't long for the Avengers. Or maybe Thor's a mutant now, Bendis is writing this so you never know.

Diablo III confirmed for consoles

So far 2012 looks to be the year of the budget in the DevilDinosaur household, so the twitter announcement that Blizzard is porting out Diablo III to consoles is great news. My desktop PC is about 6 years old and in desperate need for an upgrade. The other day the fan in the power plant went out and I had to scrounge in my spare parts box just to get it back up and running. It was a sad realization that my rig won't play anything more graphically demanding than bejeweled blitz. I have a newer laptop but really, laptop gaming? What's the point?

It'll be interesting to see how Diablo III actually plays on a console. Diablo has never had the most complicated control scheme or even really advanced graphics, so it should be doable. I'm also guessing it will be easier to join multiplayer games with friends on xbox live than the old IP address shuffle of Diablo II.

Another new Star Wars special edition

The new 3d versions Star Wars haven't even hit the theaters yet and George Lucas is already lining up another special edition of Episode IV. This one is the XXX Parody version, which I assume means everyone will be on hoverboards and they'll be drinking a lot of Space-Mountain Dew. you know.. because it's so eXXXtreme!

Ok, 2 real thoughts on this. First it's amazing how cheap CGI has gotten. Some of the special effects in this are mind bottling, especially when you consider they probably only cost an eight ball and a couple of Can-Jobs.

Second, there aren't a lot of women in this trailer. That can't be good for anyone can it?

And the award for most internety thing I saw today goes to this mash up of He-Man and the Ghost Rider 2 trailer. We're all in debt to uber-nerd Jesse Wolf for putting this thing together.

Two things in this mash up really stood out to me. First off I love how much footage is taken from the He-Man Christmas special. The one where Skeletor learns the true meaning of Christmas. If I had to rank cartoon Christmas specials, that episode would be in there somewhere. Secondly I think Nic Cage would make a fantastic He-Man. Seriously, the part where about the kid turning into the Antichrist. I really thought Nic Cage was Prince Adam.

I'd like to say I've been working on this year end round up the entire week I was off, but I'd rather not turn this into a blog of lies. A blog of flies maybe. The Ron Swanson Pyramid of Greatness. This year saw a lot of really great characters on TV and Ron Swanson was easily the manliest of the manly. His pyramid/manifesto was perfect.

Generic Robots Fighting Part 3. Out of all the movie trailers I put up this year, this one for Transformers 3 was in my top 10? That is depressing as hell.

Kindle Fire; my new comic book reader, the Review

Smartly, my wife completely ignored my official DevilDinosaur Christmas Wish List (patent pending) and along with her parents, bought me a Kindle Fire. Now I'm a tech guy, but I'm not a TECH guy. I couldn't tell you how the fire stacks up against a nook or an iPad so I'm going to skip even attempting any sort of traditional review. However, I do plan on reading a lot of comic books on the Fire so I thought I'd talk about how it stacks up as a device solely for reading comics.

Since Christmas I've only been able to use the Fire for a few hours. As you can tell in the picture above, my son keeps high jacking it to play Angry Birds. I spent the first hour or two just going through all the preloaded apps, adjusting settings and loading up the essentials like Netflix. After that I buried myself in the comixology app (which is preloaded).

The app itself is quick to load, and pretty easy to navigate. Featured books are on the front page and there's a tab for just added and popular books. There's also a search feature that's simple enough. It's nowhere near as rewarding as scanning through books at a shop, but it's not bad. If you know what you want you'll find it quickly but if you're looking to browse you'll really only see the most popular comics like Batman, the Avengers, or the Walking Dead.

There are a lot of free books available to download but I found the selection a bit lacking. Most of the full issues are at least a year old and considering the recent changes in the Marvel and DC universes, the freebies from the big 2 were ridiculously out of date. Still, there were cool books to be had, like Invincible #1 or GI Joe: Cobra #1.

For me, price is still the biggest disappointment. I like that Marvel and DC have decided they're going to publish books day and date, but keeping the digital versions at cover price seems out of touch. At full price I can either read the digital version which at some point I know I'll have to delete due to storage issues or I can go buy the paper version and keep it forever. Hell, if I'm lucky it might even be worth something some day. Like a lot of comic nerds, I'm a collector. Knowing that the digital issues are temporary is a hard pill for me to swallow. It would be much easier with a spoon full of low price point (99 cents!).

The experience of actually reading comics on the Fire has been the biggest surprise so far. I like it, a lot. The screen resolution is great, colors are nice and vivid. The fire is a bit too small to be able to read an entire comic page on one screen but the comixology app has a couple of zoom features. The one I like the best allows you to read a page one panel at a time. You definitely lose something in the composition of the page by reading a comic this way, but you can always zoom back out with just a couple taps. It's not perfect, but it's a lot better than I thought it would be. The comixology app even has some slick transitions from panel to panel that gives some sequences a real cinematic effect.

Amazon has an exclusivity deal with DC comics to publish a bunch of their trade paperbacks on Kindle. For the most part these trades cost 9.99, which isn't a bad price break. You're saving about 5 dollars on average. I have yet to use the native comic reader on the Fire (since it costs more scrilla), hopefully it works as well as the comixology one. The big downside here is that Marvel has decided to put all it's eggs in the Nook basket. You can find plenty of single issues from Marvel on the comixology app, but you can't find any trades in the regular Amazon marketplace.

It's way too early for me to come out with some sort of final verdict for the Kindle Fire as it relates to reading comics. However, so far the experience has been very impressive. It by no means is going to cut back on my time at the comic book shop, but in the long run it might save me a couple dollars on some titles I was on the fence about.

Christmas List: A Nintendo 64

It's the day before Christmas and we've finally come to a stop on the official DevilDinosaur Christmas Wish List (patent pending). I couldn't think of a better way to close out this exercise in blogging (and padding page views) than with this famous clip of the N64 freak out kid.

In a way, all of us has a Nintendo 64 we're wishing for. For some, an iPad might be their N64. For others, a good education might be their N64. For us, El Guapo is a big, dangerous man who wants to kill us. But as sure as my name is Lucky Day, the people of Santa Poco can conquer... sorry that quote kind of got away from me there.

Gaming's biggest joys and disappointments of 2012. Good list. For me the biggest gaming disappointment was easily Dead Island. That trailer was soo amazing. When I finally saw a walk through of the gameplay I knew it wasn't going to live up to the hype. Too bad.

The man who told the internet he came from the future. Very interesting article about a man named John Titor who appeared on the web in the late 90s and claimed he was from the future. I mean no one really believed him but it's still an interesting read. In a related story I finally saw Hot Tub Time Machine. That was a pretty good movie, way better than I expected.

I have no idea why studios insist on premiering trailers for highly anticipated movies in theaters a couple days before they put them up on the web? Seriously it's like they want us to pirate their trailers or something.

Anyhoo, here's the trailer for Ridley Scott's Alien prequel/not prequel Prometheus. Remember in Alien when they spelunked down into the cave with all the eggs and there was this giant looking dead alien thing in a chair? This movie is supposed to be about them, not about the actual Aliens. Or course that hasn't stopped rumors that people have been seen on the set in the traditional Alien costume. Either way the movie looks cool.

...and that took roughly 2 hours to get pulled down. here's a better non-death blow version.

I used the picture of Think Geek's awesome bag of holding messenger bag but I'm really referring to a real bag of holding. Come on science get off your butt. Even the shortest trips with my toddler can feel like an expedition to the north poll. You have to carry diapers, snacks, an extra change of clothes, toys, a bottle for him and daddy. All that stuff can get pretty unwieldy.

That's why I need a magic bag. Seriously why isn't anyone working on this!

A bunch of nerds I'm not really familiar with put together this video of Gauntlet in Real life, at a Christmas party, a bad sweater Christmas party. It's pretty cool.

I have a real love hate relationship with the game gauntlet. At Expo '86 in Vancouver I blew all my allowance in like 15 minutes playing Gauntlet. That was the worst. The rest of the trip I was that kid just wistfully watching all the kids with quarters playing games. Every once in a while I would check the coin return slots for spare quarters... man, Canda sucks.

Hooray for the Youtubes! It took about 6 hours but the internet finally has a nice embeddable copy of the new Dark Knight Rises Trailer. It looks pretty cool, however Bane's mask looks pretty stupid and Catwoman's we are the 99% speech comes across as hollow. Anne Hathaway just looks like a spoiled college kid, if they were going to have Catwoman be some sort of social activist they probably should have picked an actress with more gravitas.

Still, Alfred's plea to Bruce Wayne was killer, and the explosion at the Football game looked really cool. I'm more of a Marvel guy, but I'm WAY more excited to see this than I am the Avengers. Go Figure

I'm not sure what happened, but sometime after he left Saturday Night Live and made that awful Red Sox movie with Drew Barrymore, Jimmy Fallon actually became funny. For proof I'll give you last weekends Saturday night Live. While this Tebow sketch doesn't actually have him in it, SNL was pretty solid all the way around.

I don't know how it came to this, but if given the option between watching Late Night with Jimmy Fallon or Conan, I'll probably watch Fallon. Seriously, how did that happen?

EA asked youtube master Freddie Wong to make them a Battlefield 3 commercial. The asked the commercial specifically show off one of the things you can do in Battlefield that you can't do in Call of Duty.

I think he hit the nail on the head. Weird teamwork/vehicle moments like this are on the reasons I love Battlefield 3. It's certainly not because I'm good at the game. The guys I was playing with last night can attest to how much I suck. I believe at one point my exact quote was "I'm not very good with the guns".

Games like Call of Duty and Battlefield can be really really intimidating and frustrating when you start playing them on-line. It's hard these days to get excited for a movie over just a poster. However when that poster has Abraham Lincoln looking all bad ass like he just chopped up a bunch of sparkly vampires, I get pretty excited.

I never did read Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter, I did read Pride and Prejudice and Zombies, which was good but didn't really leave me with the desire to read more goofy monsters in history books. Maybe if I do get a kindle for Christmas I'll download it on the cheap.

The Dark Knight Rises gets a poster. I just read the novelization of the Batman: No Man's Land storyline by Chuck Dixon (yeah I'm that kind of nerd), and man I've never been more excited to see Bane on the big screen. I'm not the biggest bat-nerd in the world so I've really only known Bane from his cartoon and video game appearances. He is an excellent character, and I'm hoping he doesn't get lost in the Catwoman shuffle.

The 9 greatest Nerd Fears Today. One of these is that your kid will end up loving the Star Wars Prequels more than the original trilogy... oh man that hits home. The Avengers vs The X-men

Set the wayback machine to 1987 because the Avengers are fighting the X-men again. Yesterday Marvel made a big announcement that next summer they're big event will be a 12 issue bi-weekly mini called Avengers Vs X-men.

Now the Avengers and the X-Men have fought before, a lot in fact. I mentioned 1987 because that's when the two teams "first" collided in a 4 issue mini called X-Men Vs The Avengers. In fact it's kind of a given that in any comic you read where two superhero groups show up in the same book, they start fighting. This time the beef has to do with the return of the Phoenix Force, and lets face it probably Jean Grey.

It's being written by a couple of my favorite writers (and Brian Michael Bendis) plus the artists are solid so I'm sure I'll give it a chance. If for nothing else than I really want to see Iceman clean Hawkeye's clock.

A one-off build, the Juke-R takes Nissan's ugly ass crossover my wife won't even let me look at and crams a 485 hp, twin-turbo V6 — taken from the Nissan GT-R — under its hood. It also has a matte black paint job, bigger rims, breaks and suspension which means it probably handles like Toad in Mariocart.

A couple years ago my wife and I watched one of those Food network cake all-star marathon things, where a bunch of bakers make a giant Shrek diorama out of sheetcake and fondant. It was impressively geek except that at the end of the day you were left with a kind of ugly diorama that didn't look like it tasted very good.

I guess what I'm saying is that this AT-AT is the exact opposite of that.

I haven't really been impressed with any of the celebrity World of Warcraft commercials until this one. I mean, I'm not stupid, there's no way Chuck Norris or Mr. T is actually spending nights in their basements playing World of Warcraft. However, I can totally see Aubrey Plaza dumping her boyfriend in an incredibly callous and nonchalant manner. That seems more than reasonable.

Christmas List: Lego Christmas Tree

Every day in December I plan on posting one thing from my official DevilDinosaur Christmas Wish List (patent pending). Why? Because I can.

First up is this 33 foot tall Lego Christmas Tree. I have one of those cheap fake pre-lit Christmas Trees you get at Home Depot for like $30.00 the day after Christmas. It's only about 4 feet tall, and when you look at it it's branches closely sort of resemble a bunch of green pipe cleaners. This Lego Christmas tree would definitely be a classy upgrade.

Now I'm not sure I can fit a 33ft tall tree in my house. I've never measured my ceilings so for all I know they could be 33ft tall but I figure I can stop just building when I hit ceiling.

Here's Leslie David Baker's new video 2 be Simple. There's a sentence I had no idea I'd be writing today.

I have the sound muted on my computer at work, so I have no idea how good or bad the song really is (I have a pretty good idea, though). He could be lip syncing to Rebeca Black for all I care, the video is hilarious.

There have been 4 Resident Evil movies and not one Half-Life movie? Think about it. Is there any video game better suited for the big screen? Alien invasions, scientific experiments gone awry, vast government conspiracies? It's got summer blockbuster staring Will Smith written all over it.
