No Man's Sky has a release date?

So the winner of the DevilDinosaur.com most anticipated game not named Half-Life 3, No Man's Sky has a release date! Kind of. It's been announced that it will be released in June 2016. Sure there's no exact date, so the actually likelihood of seeing it in June is about 20% but it's a start. Also there's a new Sony Playstation branded trailer. It's really similar to the previous trailer but this one hints at a bit of a plot.

I'm not going to lie to you, the fact that I've been seeing and reading about No Man's Sky for like 3 years now doesn't fill me with a ton of hope. Especially after I read that big article about how the story in Destiny was taken to the woodshed just months before it was released. We're still pretty far from Diakatana or Duke Nukem territory but I'll admit I'm getting a bit nervous. On the plus side 8 more months totally gives me time to get my PC up to snuff. I just installed a solid state hard drive so I'm on the right path. You should see how fast Windows boots.

Hey, Look at that Joker

A couple days ago Empire Magazine, who I'm pretty sure only exists as a magazine so they can be the first to leak superhero movie pics, premiered a cover that shows Jared Leto in full on Joker costume from the upcoming Suicide Squad movie.

I like it, I don't love it or anything but the more I see of him dressed as the joker the more I like. Sure he looks ridiculous but pretty much every on screen incarnation of the Joker looks ridiculous. I think people are freaking out just because it's so different. Also I'm guessing the stories of Jared Leto being a wackjob on the set of the movie probably don't help. It's like nerds want him to take the role seriously but no TOO SERIOUSLY. I don't know, I'm still excited for the film. If DC has to make their films all dark and gritty they might as well make a movie about a bunch of killers teamed up to fight even worse killers.

Supergirl the TV Show the Review

Hopefully you were able to catch the premier of Supergirl last night because I didn't. Stupid Monday nights. There's too many shows on Monday nights. The wife wants to watch Dancing with the Stars (which honestly I don't mind) AND the voice (which honestly I can't stand), so there's no room for Supergirl. I guess I can watch it on line, but I like watching shows on TV vs the computer. There's a CBS app for the Roku but I think you have to be a subscriber. I could watch it on Amazon but that means paying like 2.99 per episode.

First world problems, am I right?

Pride and Prejudice and Zombies: The Trailer

I'll take "Things that are about 5 years too late for 200, Alex"

Many Bothans Died

Jessica Jones: The Real Trailer this time... for Reals

After teasing us with teasers and sneak peaks Netflix finally came up with the good stuff. A full two minute trailer for Jessica Jones. Sorry, MARVEL'S Jessica Jones.

I really hate it when they do that. We get it you're Marvel.

Looks rad, one interesting thing of note. Jessica Jones is essentially a former superhero that quits the cape and tights biz to be a private investigator. If I remember correctly, the very first story arc of the comic book Alias (which this is based off of) has Jessica Jones getting involved in a conspiracy against Captain America. Given that she's a former superhero she has a lot of interaction with other Marvel heroes like Cap, Daredevil, Spider-Woman, etc.

It isn't until something like the 20th issue of the series (and the very last story arc) that we learn about why she quit being a superhero and what her beef with The Purple Man (played here by David Tennet) is all about. So what I find so interesting about the trailer is that it looks like this first season is going straight to the Purple Man. Also it kinda looks like they're skipping the whole "she knows a lot of superheroes" thing. At least that's what I gather by her interactions with Luke Cage at the bar. That's supposed to be Luke Cage, right?

I'm actually ok with all the changes, I'm not one of those nerds that gets caught up in the details. Find the heart of the character and make the story work for TV, that's what they did with Daredevil. Hopefully that's what they've done here too.

Messy Links

The Messy, True Story Behind The Making Of Destiny. Woof, this look at the development of Destiny isn't very flattering to Bungie. It seems like it wasn't that long ago that I was posting videos and screenshots eagerly anticipating Bungies newest megahit. Of course once I found out it would be console exclusive my interest dropped to zero. There's pretty much no point in picking up another game on the 360 (unless it's for the kiddos) and I'm all in on PC gaming right now to the point where I'll probably skip this current generation of consoles (again unless it's for the kiddos).

Anyhoo, the point is Destiny was built around a story line that was scrapped at sort of the last minute. What gamers were left with is a game that from all accounts looks good and is fun to play, but is missing any sort of coherent storyline. Some people say the original story was terrible some say it was good. Either way the team at Bungie had been working on it for nearly a decade when they decided to scrap it at the last minute, that is not ideal.

Paul Walker Furious 7 VFX shots. I'll give it to the guys behind The 7ast And The 7urious, I had no idea they had to CGI Paul Walker into so many scenes. The end scene where he's racing Dom through the hills it was pretty obvious but all these other scenes looked pretty natural.

Ron Howard’s Willow is still raucous and ridiculous 27 years later. Willow came out during a time period where I was reading a lot of movie novelizations. Not sure what the deal was but I remember there was a period of time in the late 80s early 90s where I was reading novelizations because I couldn't go to the theater and see the movie. I'm not sure if it was just that my parents didn't want to take me or if I had no friends or no money or what. I distinctly remember reading Dick Tracy, Batman, and Willow all before I eventually saw them on videotape. I'm sure there were more.

I think I didn't understand that there was a difference between reading a book that had a movie and a movie that had a book because I remember reading a lot of both.

I don't know what my point is other than Willow is a rad movie. I'm going to try and watch it with my son this weekend.

Reel Big Fish: The Set Up

According to facebook Reel Big Fish's Why do they Rock So Hard hit stores 17 years ago today. Out of all the Ska albums I own (and I own a lot) this is definitely one of the best and this video... oh man this video. Rotating drum stand, double guitars, Hawaiian shirts, I'm telling you this video has it all.

Coincidentally I just recently loaded this album onto my knockoff iPod with toshiba guts, I am going to crank this so loud on my way home today.

Star Wars: The Force Awakens Trailer #3

Here it is kiddos, our third extended look at Star Wars: The Force Awakens. Are you excited yet? BECAUSE I'M HAVING A HARD TIME KEEPING IT TOGETHER.

Sorry about that... These next couple months are going to be tough. I know it's dangerous getting my hopes up as much as I have but did you see that trailer? Han is telling the kiddos that the Force is no joke? We've come full circle people. New Tie Fighters, Black X-wings, a cool rolly droid, crashed Star Destroyers they fly the Millennium Falcon through? This is everything I've ever wanted in new Star Wars movies. I watch these trailers and it's like I'm 7 years old again watching Jedi for the first time. ARGH, TWO MONTHS!

Captain America is a Pinko

If you've ever watched Fox and Friends then you know what's coming don't you? You can tell just by the screenshot in the youtube clip? If you haven't watched Fox and Friends then buckle up Sally, you're in for some HAWT TAEKS.

In the latest issue of Captain America (a book I'm not buying due to limited funds and not really caring that much about the creative team) the newest Captain America, Sam Wilson (who you may better know as Cap's long time sidekick The Falcon) comes to the aid of some illegal immigrants who just so happen to have run afoul of the Sons of the Serpent. The Sons of the Serpent aren't exactly on the same level as Hydra or AIM when it comes to comic book evil-doers but they've been around in comics for like 40 or 50 years. Originally created as a place holder for skin-heads or neo-nazis they've sort of evolved into this group of weirdos that sometimes worship the snake god Set, while still opposing racial, ethnic, and religious minorities.

Anyway Fox news and a few other conservative media outlets see a bunch of racist white guys and they immediately self-identify with them and before you know it COMIC BOOKS ARE JUST ANOTHER FORM OF LIBERAL ATTACKS FROM THE MEDIA THREATENING REAL AMERICANS WITH THEIR LIES... AND THEY TOOK OUR JERBS!

It's so dumb I barely wanted to say anything about it but I couldn't come up with another blog post today so here we are. The thing that's really stupid is that if you've ever read comics you're already pretty familiar with Captain America being a democrat. It's not like he's out stumping for Obama but you can tell he's always been more liberal than conservative. So have the X-Men, so have the Avengers, so have the Inhumans. Comic book writers and artists inject their books with a lot of their own personality and guess what? Artists and writers tend to lean towards the liberal spectrum of things, I know that's pretty shocking. Sorry I should have told you to sit down.

That's not to say that there aren't conservative voices in the medium, they're just in the minority. I don't know what to tell you other than that. It's a free market? I voted for Kodos?

GwenLinks LinkPool

35 Awesome Cosplay Displays From NYCC 2015. I just don't have time to put together a proper or even a half-assed attempted at t NYCC cosplay post so here's one from The Robot's Voice. It's pretty good. I'm sure mine would have been funnier but whatevs.

The Xbox One Is Garbage And The Future Is Bullshit. Wow, this guy doesn't like his Xbox One. To be fair I'm guessing most people don't get a broken unit right out of the box but still setting up a new console doesn't sound fun. I get pissed when I fire up Steam and I have to wait like 5 minutes for an update.

Is Playboy Stigmatizing Nudity By No Longer Celebrating It In Its Pages? I found it mildly amusing yesterday when I read this article about 5 minutes after I read another article about how Playboy dropping nudity is proof that pornography is everywhere and we're all going to hell in a handbasket.

I don't know, Playboy didn't invent porn or anything. The internet would have led to free pornography for everyone with out without Hef's smoking jacket. Their decision to remove naked ladies from their pages is purely financial. There's no pressure for them to do it, they just realize the market for magazines without naked ladies is bigger than the market for magazines with naked ladies. I'm not really sure I would call that a stigma, that's just responding to the marketplace.

The Story Behind Bob Beamon's Miracle Jump And The Only Photo That Mattered. Warning, this is a super long form article, but it's really interesting. Amazing to think that the guy that took this photo was some random amateur photographer that just sort of wandered freely around the Olympics because he had a camera and a track jacket. Times sure have changed.

Real Mjolnir

In this blogger's not so humble opinion, one of the best scenes in Avengers: Age of Ultron is when the heroes are all gathered around, having some drinks, trying to pick up Thor's magical hammer. The best Avengers comics aren't just about a group of superheroes saving the day, it's about a group of friends that forge these familial bonds while saving the day. That one scene probably captures the essence of the comics better than any number of CGI powered fight scenes combined.

Anyhoo, the point of this is that super Youtuber Sufficiently Advanced (probably not his real name) has developed a real Mjolnir. It might not open portals to other worlds or command lighting but only the worthy can pick it up. In this case worthy = the correct fingerprints but it's still a pretty cool idea.

Also sad that we can do this with toy hammers but not with guns.... sorry. Of course we can do this with guns, we just refuse to.

Fallout 4: The Wanderer

Hey peeps, this new trailer for Fallout 4 looks hella dope. I can't wait to find out just how underpowered my PC is when this finally hits the shelves. This thing looks absolutely gorgeous, I'm guessing they're running this demo on one of those fancy GPUs that cost more than my car. Maybe I'll be able to catch this on a Steam sale in like 2019, by that time the newest Kindle will probably have more horsepower than my computer does now.

New York City Comic Con 2015 Cosplay

It's really feast of famine around here isn't it. Some days I've got like 2 or 3 posts in my other days I barely have time to throw up a cartoon or a mildly interesting youtube clip.

With that in mind, here's a cosplay video from last week's NYCC. Out of all the big comic book conventions around the country that aren't in my backyard NYCC is probably the one I'd most like to go to. It's freakishly big like San Diego is but there's a lot less Hollywood attention so you get to actually see more freaks and geeks (and I mean that in the best way). Plus you're in New York, there's a boatload of other cool stuff to do when you're done dressing up as Deadpool. One day maybe...

Non-Nude Links

Playboy to Drop Nudity as Internet Fills Demand. I saw this come across my tweet feed last night a couple times and I swear I thought it was an Onion article. Are you telling me people are going to have to actually start reading Playboy for the articles? What planet are we living on?

Also I totally picked this cover out of the 1,000 that showed up when I googled "playboy cover" because of the roller blades and swatch watches BUT look at that blurb. "The Women of The Women's Colleges". Man, that must have been a great issue.

Exploring a Decade-Old, Abandoned Fantasy Game. Minions of Mirth is the name, vast open world gameplay with out a single player around is their game. Kinda spooky, like exploring an abandoned town or something. I'm surprised the servers are still on. I can't imagine it's that expensive to maintain if there's no one logging on to play but it still can't be free.

Emilia Clarke Is the Sexiest Woman Alive 2015. Congratulations to Emilia Clarke for wining such a prestigious award? Real talk, Emilia Clarke is certainly not unattractive but she's not even the sexiest woman on Game of Thrones. Did Nathalie Emmanuel die or something?

What it's like to illustrate a cover for Marvel Comics. These Marvel Hip Hop covers are going to be the death of my budget. I picked up the Dr. Strange/Dr. Dre The Chronic cover last weekend. It was $9.99 as opposed to the regular $3.99. I can't keep with that sort of price increase, especially when there's all these new books I want to check out. Argh, first world problems.

Daredevil: Season 2 Trailer

So this last weekend at New York City Comic-Con the trailer for season 2 of Daredevil was shown. Since then it's getting posted and pulled down everywhere. This video from twitter seems to have stayed up for a while, so lets go with it. Maybe it stays up through the end of the day?

New York Comic-Con Hulkbuster

Nothing to see here, just an average cosplayer in a 9 foot tall Hulkbuster suit walking around the show floor at NYCC.

Starry Night - Vincent van Dominogh

The super domino nerds over at FlippyCat have put together this video recreating Vincent Van Gogh's Starry Night. It's pretty impressive. Like most art fans almost all of my knowledge of Vincent Van Gogh comes from that one Doctor Who episode where they they take a depressed and defeated Van Gogh to the future so he can see how much of an impact his art will one day have. Maybe the next time the Doctor and his companion (whoever they might be) meet him they'll show him this youtube clip. It'd probably have the same impact.

Loyalty Links

As fans mock Frank Miller’s ‘Dark Knight III’ cover, Kurt Busiek defends it. Long story short. Frank Miller is one of the more highly regarded artists/writers in comics history. Sin City and 300 are his creation and his runs on Daredevil and Batman have heavily influenced the versions you've seen in the theater and on TV. The kicker is that his production over the last 10 years or so has been spotty at best. His follow up to the Dark Knight Returns was almost universally panned. The first released art from his second follow up to the Dark Knight Returns, The Master Race received a lot of attention this week, but it wasn't exactly the good kind of attention.

Kurt Busiek, best know for writing very good comics, came to Miller's defense on twitter. It's a pretty good read. Good enough that it's made me think about giving The Dark Knight II another chance and MAYBE take a look at DK3 when it comes out. I mean what's the worst that could happen? I end up selling it on ebay?

Microsoft announces Surface Book laptop with 13.5-inch display starting at $1,499. I thought it would only be fair to post something about this gorgeous looking Surface Laptop after posting that Microsoft is controlled by ants video yesterday. OMG this thing is sooooo sexy. I'm probably never going to be in the position that I have fifteen hundred dollars to drop on a laptop but if I did it would be this thing. I think it's the Nvidia GeForce GPU that really pushes this over the top for me. I know the knock against it is going to be that it's just a surface with a keyboard but with that GPU and an Intel i7 under the hood you definitely have a laptop that's incredibly powerful and versatile.

Brand Loyalty Is for Suckers. OMG there is a guy I work with who is APPLE FOR LIFE. It's insane how much of their Kool-Aid he's drank. The other day someone in the office who can't figure out how to change the ringtone on his android phone (yes, you read that correctly) was complaining about it and Captain Apple 4 Life was like "we'll maybe if you get a real phone". Like only Apple makes "real" phones. It's so weird.

Now don't get me wrong, I understand having some conformity in your digital life. No one wants to deal with like a dozen different types of proprietary software that refuses to play nice with each other. But when you start automatically writing off products from other companies before even giving them a chance you're just hurting yourself.

22 Stupidly Wonderful Halloween Costumes You Can Actually Buy. I know, I know this is pretty much the same list of terrible "sexy" halloween costumes every other website is doing but I actually found this one kind of funny. Which is hard for me to say considering it's on buzzfeed. BUZZFEED (shakes fist at the sky)

Microsoft Sucks

Youtuber Dunkey has some opinions on Microsoft.... mostly in how they relate to video games and video gamers. I don't necessarily agree with him but I found the video enjoyable nonetheless. Rants about the price of Xbox Live or how terrible the quality control was for the first generation of Xbox 360 are pretty played out. What I really found interesting was the brief insight to what it's like to be a professional youtube personality. As I've mentioned before my kid watches a boatload of youtube and I'm pretty fascinated with that whole world.

Also ants, the part about the ants was fantastic.

Handjob Cabin

I'm pretty sure this is a fake trailer but these days who knows. A couple months ago I actually watched something called Zombeavers, which I know I covered here in the blog but I totally thought was a joke.

Anyway, here's the trailer for Handjob Cabin. It's definitely not as good as Blowjob cabin but it's better than BlueBalls Cabin.

Summer '78

Here's a fun little short film about a kid playing with some of the early Star Wars toys. It's enjoyable enough, it's certainly worth three and a half minutes of your time. It's good enough that I'll forgive the filmmakers for calling it Summer '78 when it shows toys that weren't available until '79.

Beastie Links

The Pentagon's 'Concurrency Myth' Is Now Available In Supercarrier Size. Hey, want to read an article that will make you upset over how the military spends its money? Well, today is your lucky day. What's a few Billion dollars building an aircraft carrier that can't actually launch aircraft? It's not like they're spending your money.

New Star Wars Character Inspired By The Beastie Boys. One of the characters in the new Star Wars movie is an X-Wing Pilot called Ello Asty... as in Hello Nasty. His Helmet even has Born to Ill written on it in some weird made up language. I'm guessing that Ello Asty probably won't have a lot of lines but I'll bet he sells plenty of figures. George Lucas would be so proud.

10 White People Who Inexplicably Became Ninjas. Do you think Japan has a version of the white guy becomes ninja trope? Like is there a whole series of movies where Japanese guys are raised by rednecks? I feel like there's a frog gigging montage in there somewhere.

I Tried Daily Fantasy Sports And It Is Evil. This is the weekly NFL Dick Joke Jambaroo from Drew Magary which is something I normally wouldn't link to (although you should be reading it anyway) but he goes a bit long form up at the top talking about his experience with Draft Kings who you may or may not have noticed now SPONSOR EVERY FOOTBALL GAME EVER! I've always wanted to know just what kind of a scam they're running over there and he lays it out for you pretty well.

Long story short if you want to throw away your money send it to me. I'm buying a bunch of Scooby-Doo Team Up #12s because Harley Quinn is the guest star and there was a low print run. When the Suicide Squad movie hits I'm going to be rolling in it!

Avengers: Age of Ultron

Minecraft: Story Mode

My son and I have been playing a lot of Minecraft on the kindle lately. It's a lot more fun that I thought it would be, turns out there's a reason it's a billion dollar cash machine. However, it's not a perfect game by any means. One of the biggest complaints I've seen of the game is that there's essentially zero story or plot. While that can be a good thing I understand that some gamers need to feel like they're building to something not just building for building's sake.

Well we're all in luck. As opposed to Mojang or Microsoft shoehorning a plot or a story into Minecraft 2 they've given the reigns to Telltale Games who have created a narrative-driven game simply called Minecraft: Story Mode. It looks like it could be a lot of fun and since Telltale Games usually release their games in small episodes over the course of a year it probably will be pretty cheap to pick up and try. Hooray for everyone?

Jessica Jones: teaser #3?

I will give it to Marvel and Netflix, they sure know how to provide nerdy bloggers with content. I believe this is the 3rd teaser for Jessica Jones they've released in the last two weeks. If we're lucky next week we'll actually get to hear her say a line!
