Comic-con Round-up

10 thoughts on Scott Pilgrim vs the World. I can't believe this is coming out the same weekend as the Expendables. Doesn't Hollywood know I have a kid now?

Sucker Punch art and answers. Man I really hope this doesn't suck.

Max Brooks to Write WWII Graphic Novel. I first read this as "World War Z II" which would have been way cooler.

Harry Potter Shirt stabbed a guy. Honestly, if I had to stand in line for 3 hours to get into the tron panel I might stab a guy too.

Pacey-Con invokes Glory days of Dawson's Creek. Who knew Joshua Jackson had it in him to be this funny? Also, I would totally rock out at Pacey-Con. "i don't wanna wait for our lives to be over..."

Finally a Sucker Punch trailer

Is there anything worse than having to wait 3 extra days for a trailer to go from Comic-Con exclusive to a youtube free for all? I mean this is the future right? Shouldn't they be beaming this straight to our brains? Get on that Steve Jobs and make sure I don't need a stupid bumper just to get reception.

Best fish impersonation you'll see today

So this overly elaborate goal celebration happened in some Icelandic league no one has ever heard of. In a related story, I actually had a shot on goal this weekend. While I was doing my celebratory robot dance the other team counter attacked and scored. What I'm trying to say is I'm not very good at soccer, but I do a bad ass robot dance.

San Diego Comic Con Cosplay round 2

There's that HWGuy I was looking for earlier.

I'm not gonna lie to you, you're probably going to get sick of all the Comic Con posts this week. However, it's my blog and I'll do what I want, which in this case is to pad hits by pandering to the almighty google image search.

With that in mind, here's more Cosplay on Parade. I love these nerds. If I had free time, the ability to sew and a complete lack of dignity I would totally be at SDCC with them rocking something spandexy.

Olivia Munn?

smart posing, keep your "assets" in the foreground

Henchmen #21 & #24. the popular choice for tubby guys everywhere.

lady Tele-VViper is totally stealing this scene.

the Human Centepide cosplay happened.

Hey look 75 virgins!

"form of a bulging crotch!"

needs more cockatoo

at comic-con green man cosplay could've gone very bad.

"Is heaven missing an angel? 'Cause you've got nice cans!"

Mad Eye Moody or hobo with fancy eye patch? you decide

The Walking Dead trailer

As expected AMC premiered some footage from The Walking Dead at comic-con this weekend. Also as expected it looks awesome (well except for the actual quality of the video footage, it's better than Cry Cry Again but worse than Death Blow).

.. The Blurst of Times. SDCC

what's up nerds?

Having a teething 8 month old has provided me with ample opportunities to watch absolute garbage TV shows at 2 in the morning. With "..the Blurst of Times" I'll tell you all about whatever horrible abortion of a TV show I watched the night before.

G4's coverage of the San Diego Comic Con was equal parts awesome geekery and shameless nerd pandering. Actually it was more like 65 percent nerd pandering and about 35 percent awesome geekery (which not coincidentally is about the same ratio found in G4 host Olivia Munn).

The actual show seemed like it was edited by a 12 year old on angel dust. Every thing from the floor was shaky cams and MTV style quick cuts. Sure call me a cranky old man, but sometimes I actually want to see the Comic Con exclusive He-Man Molar figure for more than half a second... and Actual comic news!

Things and people I liked:
Cosplayers! Comic-Con always delivers when it comes to nerds dressed up as nerdy things. G4 did a decent job showing lots of the costumed dorks from the floor.
Comic book coverage! It wasn't great but at least it was there. I get it that SDCC is all about TV shows and movies these days so it's nice that there was a little bit of comic book love.
Thor! Kenneth Branagh and Chris Hemmsworth totally sold me on Thor. They were great. Especially when you compared them to the casts of Captain America and Green Lantern, who seemed almost bored to be there.
Daniel Dae Kim! admitted to putting on a mask and buying a couple lightsabers off the floor, just like regular people.
Ali Larter! Looks great pregnant. there I said it, so sue me

Things and people that sucked:
Oliva Munn! She was just kind of obnoxious. If she wasn't talking over Kevin Pereira's questions, or blatantly reading from a teleprompter, she was screwing up Nathan Fillion's name.
Michael Chiklis! needs to take off those stupid sunglasses. He looked like an idiot.
No panels! The talked about the panels constantly, Why was there no actual footage from them? Let say you had to spend all day in line to catch the Tron panel, wouldn't it be nice to see something from the ones you missed?
Artists Alley! Is huge and awesome and was never mentioned once.
Blair Butler's under bite! Just kidding Blair... kind of.

I closing; On a scale of 1 to when I fell asleep G4's Comic-Con coverage scores a hefty 4 hours. However, if I hadn't been watching it on delay through the DVR I never would have made it The fast forward button got a pretty good work out.

Westboro gets pwned, the video

Yes I know I'm harping on this story way too much, but I thought some of you would like to see video of the Westboro Baptist asshats getting out protested at comic con. As a special bonus, keep an eye out for the guy in the Ichiro shirt immediately followed by a girl carrying a 8 foot kingdom hearts key. So random it's awesome.

Revenge of Cosplay on Parade: 2010

Cosplay is awesome. I could go on and on about why but if you need me to explain why it's awesome, you're clearly at the wrong blog. Here's the best I could find from day one at SDCC*.

Slave Leia? well now I've seen everything.

Nice guns.... teehee

Team Fortress 2 cosplay is awesome, but where's HWG?

Car cosplay? Now I've seen everything.

Glad to see Pimp Boba Fett found a friend.

This guy looks deadly.. with a sewing needle

great costume, awesome picture. b&w makes everything classy

I made fun of this guy last year. I think he's lost some weight.

That sock monkey's mouth is terrifying

Citizen V? +10 nerd points for odd character choice

Worst Stalone cosplay ever. Wait that's him? oh.

* super disclaimer. I found all of these on the net (twitter, flickr, blogger, google image search), I didn't actually take any of these. If one of these pics is yours and you don't want me using it or you just want credit for it let me know.

And here's Bender..

Thank you comicsalliance.com for getting these up so quickly. Fake Protesters, Cosplay, Nerds, Comc-con. If only there were some soccer Wags there, this would be the best post ever.

Maybe this wasn't a good idea

When the Westboro Baptist Church decided to protest at Comic-Con this year they might as well have picked an internet fight with 4-chan. Above is a nice slice of the anti-protestors that came out to protest the Westboro Baptists Church's protest. Below you get a better idea just how big the crowd was. From what I understand there was a guy cosplaying as Bender with a "Kill all humans" sign, which is beyond awesome.

These are just the counter protestors, Westboro only had like 3 people there. If they weren't crazy pricks I'd feel bad for them.

Riley really loved that glove

I take it back Thor I love you!

OMG, This picture has me squeeling like a 12 year old Bieber believer. I take back all the awful things I said about you Thor Movie. You look fantastic!

I think I'm going to start standing in line tonight, odds are my family won't miss me that much.

Thor from space. Plus other bad ideas

So I guess Thor is from space now. Apparently some movie making genius decided the average viewer wouldn't accept old school Norse gods running around blowing stuff up in a modern day setting. However Joe six pack will totally embrace the idea of Aliens that have been mistaken for Norse gods running around blowing stuff up in a modern day setting. Which is great because it sounds totally stupid. However it doesn't sound as stupid as turning Captain America into Captain Planet.

"He wants to serve his country, but he's not this sort of jingoistic American flag-waver," Johnston said. "He's just a good person. We make a point of that in the script: Don't change who you are once you go from Steve Rogers to this super-soldier, you have to stay who you are inside, that's really what's important more than your strength and everything. It'll be interesting and fun to put a different spin on the character and one that the fans are really going to appreciate."

"Yeah and it's also the idea that this is not about America so much as it is about the spirit of doing the right thing," the director said. "It's an international cast and an international story. It's about what makes America great and what make the rest of the world great too."

~ Joe Johnston director of Captain America

Let me translate that for you. "The studio says we can't make Captain America too American because we need overseas revenue."

I just hate the hubris of these Hollywood idiots. They're working with characters that have been popular for 40 plus years and they insist on changing them "for the better". You know what? I won't appreciate a different spin on the character. But I really don't appreciate some d-bag (that's probably never read any of the comics) telling me I'm going to appreciate a different spin on the character.

Honestly, I'm not sure there's anything else I can say on this subject that this picture of Captain America punching out Hitler doesn't say.

Punk kid gets what's coming to him

Here's the deal, any kid that gets to go to skateboard camp deserves to be leveled by a fat guy with a microphone. When I was a kid I had to go to horse riding camp, you know how much fun horse riding camp is? About as much fun as it sounds. The girls weren't even that cute. stupid Miracle Ranch

Serenity Now!

Not only is Serenity Now one of the best Sienfeld episodes but now it's an awesome action thriller.

Save the Star Wars!

So as some of you nerds probably already know, several of the Tatooine scenes in Star Wars were shot on location in Tunisia. When lucas was done filming he just left all the stuff he didn't want behind. It was the 70s and no one cared about the enviroment yet. There are some pretty good stories about how the crew was surprised when they came back to the Tunisian desert to film the Phantom Menace and found a bunch of the props from Star Wars half buried in the desert. But I digress...

The desert is destroying the Owen Homestead! You know, that place where Luke grew up fixing water collectors and bulls-eyeing wamp rats. If you have money to burn and they've finally stopped oil spilling out into the gulf (they have? hooray!) go donate a few dollars to some nerds that want to restore it. Cause the next time you go to Tunisia what else are you going to look at?

Extinction > Devastator

Tell me this isn't the awesomest transformer you've ever seen. If I had seen this as a 10 year old I'm pretty sure I would have peed my pants. Odds are I was going to pee my pants anyway, but at least I would have had a good reason.
